after watching buddy baer vs joe louis 1 i have come to the firm conclusion that baer should have won that fight . its right there in black and white its quite clear baer won on a foul as louis hit him cleanly after the bell. so if baer had won the fight how would it have changed the history and lineage of the heavyweight division? im sure most of you will say that louis would have kod him in the rematch like he did in real life but what if there was no contract for a rematch who would buddy have chosen to take on for the title and how would he have fared?
Hard to say IMO, because Buddy was pretty inconsistent, he lost to some fighters he should have normally beaten.
Louis was giving him a pretty thorough pasting.Only a sadist could have truly wanted to see them rematch after seeing what Louis did to him in the sixth round.
Baer got the hell beaten out of him and ran right into a Louis right hand at the bell. He was given a minute to recover but would not come out for the next round. No controversy about this one. Buddy Baer however deserves a ton of credit for showing incredible toughness even superior to that of his brother for the 6 rounds he stood up against the punishment, regardless of what happened in the rematch. Louis's combinations were savage, fight enders each one of them. Bear was in a crippling car accident before the rematch against Louis, but claimed to keep it quiet to protect the gate. His career was done early in his 20s. Had that not occured, he was buildling a good resume and appeared to be peaking. If he kept growing, he might have been a strong contender down the line, don't think he was ever Championship material though(unless you completely take Louis and the car accident off the table, leaves things open, with guys like Simon in the top 5 mix he had already beat.)
