Consistently on my Almost-in-the-top-5 of heavyweight boxers list (with the likes of Jimmy Ellis, Riddick Bowe, Max Baer, and Bert Cooper.) As much as my fondness for their style goes, naturally. Great upper-body movement. Fantastic combinations. Most fights entertaining as hell. Your favorite bout of his?
My favorite was his war with Bert Cooper but he certainly had a lot of entertaining moments. Very good combination puncher when he was younger and he had an excellent right jab.
Bert Cooper too though I wanted Bert to win. Also his heavyweight fights vs Alex Stewart, Holyfield II and Bothat. I really followed him at light-heavyweight, best fights were: Frankie Swindell I and Leslie Stewart and loved his ko´s vs Jeff Thomson, Freddie Delgado and Mario Melo.
Yep. No ATG, but very good all the same. It is a pity his resume has been somehow marked with the "Got cocky and lost to Grandpa Big George and afterwards got spanked by Holy". But all things considered, he was a very good boxer.
I think that there is a bit more to him than most people recall. If he had come along when cruiserweight was a more respected division, we might view him very differently.
Yeah…I’m sure he’d have done well in that division if he’d made a stop rather than jumping straight to heavy.
I enjoyed the Holyfield rematch. Moorer showed a lot of toughness in that fight even though he couldn’t stay on his feet.
Just so. I didn't want to list that fight because Moorer lost, but it was the best Moorer fight to watch. Holyfield Vs. Moorer 2
First time I ever saw him was in 1988 or 89 against Frankie Swindell. I was impressed with him but then sort of forgot about him for a while. The next time was against Jeff Thompson ( a former stable mate ) and he KO’d Thompson without working up a sweat. From then onward I followed Moorer a bit more closely.
In the infamous words of Willie Sutton when asked why he became a bank robber: " Because that is where the money is! "
Fight with Cooper was a gasser. I never thought a lot of him but he beat Holy, even it there was a heart attack involved. You can't deny him.
Liked his fights with Cooper and Stewart. Would liked to have seen him in with a few others of his gen, like Mercer, Morrison, Bruno. Tough but possibly winning fights.
That was a good fight. I always wonder "what-if" concerning Moorer having stayed at LHW. It was filled with some stiff competition: Virgil, Prince Charles, Frankie, Uriah Grant, Harding etc.....they were all making their bones around that time. Moorer was a small HW but a humongous LHW. It could've been very interesting had he not "letharged" out of the division, judging by his HW campaign he definitely had the power to give everybody pause in the division
