So often you will see a boxer far behind on the cards and still fights a 12th round asif it was the 8th; no adaptations and no higher workrate whatsoever. For instance, Holyfield vs Sultan looked just like the 6th round in the 12th despite Holyfield having his last chance ever to win something big. Maybe not the best example considering Holyfield's age, but you get the point. Kessler went all out and came with HARD shots, combinations of them in fact. He was really pressing the action and i thought he won that round (but clearly lost the fight). You could see that he really wanted it bad. That is the true spirit of boxing to me. I hate the lack lustre attitude of doing 3 minutes the same stuff that doesn't work in every round including the 12th.
As much as Kessler showed great heart and determination in the last round. It was as much down to Calzaghes balls to try and give the crowd even more drama by being willing to have a bit of a tear up in the round rather than stick to the game plan which had won him the rounds previous
You got that ****ing right. Kessler, like a man, and a throwback boxer recognized he had lost and just came out and put it all on the line, rather than acting like nothing was at stake, then raising his arms and cheering when it ended. He knew he was behind in the fight and let it hang out, trying to turn things around. Complete respect for the man, and he has a great career still to come.
I liked when Kellerman asked Kessler if he thought of taking a knee in round 8, and Kessler just looked at him and basically said he would never do that even if he was hurt. Kessler is a class act and believe it or not, I respect him more now, than before the fight. Hats off to both men!
Yes I agree! I posted a thread earlier that touched on this subject...I hate seeing so many guys that are obviously behind in the last round and don't even attempt to try for the necessary KO. Kessler came out with a Mayorga-like attack in the last round, which was his only shot at winning, and I give him mad respect for that. :thumbsup
To be honest I wouldn't have expected anything less from him - while tired, it was the obvious thing to do with the power that he as and he gave it his best shot. He did catch Calzaghe too but Joe's chin stood up to the test. Kessler is a gentleman outside the ring and fairly scary inside, which is what you want your boxer to be.
Man, that round was a great finish to a great fight. Followed by the bell ringing, the hug, and the touching of gloves. Romantic as hell. Another fight like that in recent memory was Morales-Pacquiao I. Christ, that 12th round.... woooo. Best round of the whole trilogy.
although as you described is an improvement over so many fighters, it sounds as if kessler should've turned it up a few rounds before, not just the last one.
Yeah that was great. He was hitting Joe too. Imagine if he could have went more rounds like that, could have took the win. I think his stamina was the reason he could not. I like also emmanuel steward who during that round was asked by Jim what he though of Mikkel still fighting like that. emmanuel said in a very light wierd voice, 'yes, I LIKE it'. Did anyone else catch that and thought it was funny?
