Many on this board before the Hopkins fight has Winky in their top 3 p4p, and he loses a close decision to Hopkins, even outboxing the bigger man the first half of the fight before B-Hop figured him out. Hops would come in and throw 4-5 punch combos and hit nothing but gloves. The bigger man just got the better of Winky that night. I had Winky winning 5 rounds too so the fight was close. Now people are saying "Winky is a bad fight for Joe" hell no. Dawson is occupied right now. Woods isn't as big of a name in America, and the Hop fight isn't going through. This might be the best fight for Joe south of 175. Get off Winky's ass he lost a CLOSE DECISION to an ATG and is still a top 8-12 p4p fighter. Joe fighing Hopkins in march could do wonders for both men. It would get Calzaghe more leverage for a megafight with Hopkins, and if Winky wins he is a top 4 or 5 p4p fighter once again. But I do think Winky should come in at about 165. He loses too much speed coming in at around 180 as he did with Hop. He does not carry the weight well but don't count him out if he is in better shape.
You prove your worth by fight, and before the Hopkins fight, I considered Winky to be one of the best. I thought he beat Jermain Taylor, I thought he was the best man at middleweight, he just beat Sam Soliman, so he was riding high. But when he fought Bernard, he seemed to have gave up when he got cut, and Bernard looked very old, and Winky looked bad also, they both really looked old in that fight.
I think the fight was just a chess match. When you have two great defensive fighters they can be hesitant at missing and being countered. Wright did the blocking and landing in the first half, and Bernard adapted and did the same the 2nd half. I think their styles made them look that way. They werent slow and both threw over 600 punches. The workrate would go up against a fighter not as skilled in counterpunching and defense like Joe Cal.
That fight just left a bad taste in my mouth in general. Since he was the loser in a bad fight it has even more of a negative impact. i am a big Winky fan, but after that fight even I need reminding why I like the guy. He should fight Arthur Abraham, then Sturm, then unify against the winner of Pavlik-Talylor II.
