I get it. He's cuban. Which automatically makes him some worldbeater apparently. But lets talk realistically for a second. I like Lara, I do. I think he's a very good fighter, but I also think his cuban background gets him put on a premature pedalstool just because Cuban fighters happen to be masterclass boxers. His skill level is overrated. He lost P-Dubb. Molina pushed him to the absolute limit. Drawed against Martirosyan. and was seconds away from getting stopped by Angulo. I could honestly say that we don't know how good Lara is. If you want to say that he's at a certain skill level then he needs to start OUTCLASSING fighters. For all the praise the Rigondeaux gets, he earns it. He goes in and outclasses fighters. People keep giving Lara the benefit of the doubt, but in reality he needs to prove himself a little more. I'd be in the minority, but I'd take Canelo in a fight against him. At least until Lara shows more
I'm glad they're overrating him and talking about him. He earned this position and deserves the type. If you don't like to see fighters get hyped and would rather see everyone live in a caravan then you're going to complain about having far too many neighbors.
I don't mind the hype. I think even fighter who people are talking about is good for the sport. But people are making assumptions about his skill level based on what? He's shown that he has excellent ring IQ and ring generalship, good power, suspect chin, leaky defense that is VASTLY overrated, and great accuracy. That's it.
I agree. People think this guy would outbox Mayweather. Mayweather would embarrass him. Lara who's bigger, would still elect to run away. That's the type of "fighter" he is. Let him fight Kirkland and see if he can EARN the right to fight Mayweather. The problem is, Kirkland would beat the hell outta him. But then again, that could potentially set up a Mayweather vs Kirkland fight which would be one HELL of a fight.
Lara beat Paul Williams, Vanes, Trout and Angulo on my scorecard. He has a draw to Molina though, but I think he'd win a rematch
yeah I don't see how people thought Vanes could have won more than a few rounds. Lara fought pretty skiddish, but he still landed all the meaningful punches while Vanes didn't land sheet.
The way I see it, anyone who rates Lara as some P4P caliber talent is overrating him. He's still a top fighter at 154 and deserves a crack at the bigger fights, people simply go a little too far in saying how easy he'd take out other contenders/champs when he has too much of a history of fighting at his opponents' level. The Trout fight was a step in the right direction in changing that perception. In my mind, he's done enough to have earned a Kirkland or Canelo fight next.
Hop off those ginger nuts for a sec and give Lara his dues. By mine and many others scorecards he is the only man to beat Trout, not only beating him but completely schooling him. Lara is all wrong for Canelo. He also beats Floyd
I think Lara is only going to look good against amateur point scoring styles but will look mediocre against anyone that is a fighter as much as they are a boxer. Floyd would beat him no doubt. Floyd can actually fight when he has to and isn't going to play the point scoring game with Lara, he'll press the action (like against Judah or Mosley) take Lara out of his comfort zone and maybe even knock him out. I think Alvarez would lose some rounds against Lara but ultimately knock him out. Unlike Donaire vs. Rigo (where most people broke the fight down with only two things in mind, suspect chin vs big puncher) Alvarez can set up his shots very well whereas Donaire was always seen as a one trick pony.
Lara gave a lot of the early rounds away and it was hardly the robbery people make it out to be. People think Trout beat Canelo ffs, but saying Williams edged it by a round is considered blasphemy around here. :nut
i thought lara won the early rounds against P william pretty clearly and easily. so did roy jones and max kellerman and harold lederman i also though Canelo clearly beat austin trout and in a close match up.
