I love lampley's commentating, but he's blind

Ever notice that Lampley is no more discerning than the casual fan when it comes to effective punching? I'm re-watching the first few rounds of Toney-Jirov on the heels of all this toney talk and Jirov is just windmilling with his arms, hitting nothing but air and shoulder, while toney is lands a TON of short little uppercut hooks on the MONEY, and all lampley says is "Jirov throws a straight right! and left!! etc).. nevermind if they don't ****ing land or anything, Jim.

watch toney's work on the inside at the end of round 2 (5:30=ish). A sight to behold.

It's not just Lampley. Several announcers are like that. In the recent Marquez/McKart fight over and over again the announcers kept calling the fight for Marquez. Raul threw everything but the kitchen sink. Maybe 20% landed while Bronco laid up on the ropes and counterpunched the **** out of Marquez. It was good, competetive action, but to hear the guys at ringside tell it McKart wasn't even in the fight. In the end it was a draw. This **** happens all the time. Sometimes I get so aggravated I have to hit the mute button.

I hate listening to Nick Charles on Showtime. Delivery is terrible and his vision for what is actually happening is down right embarrassing. Lampley just over hypes every thing he sees. And counts so many shots that don't acutally land. Barry Tompkins was soooooo much better on HBO but God, that's been like 20 years ago. He and Merchant were a perfect fit IMO.

Commentators play a major role in how a fight is perceived by the public, and a lot of them will just sensationalize the big winging punches because they look better, regardless of how effective they really were. It's quite frustrating, indeed, and doesn't bode well for a fighter who likes to sit in the pocket and pick his shots. Kind of a shame.

much as I may consider merchant to be a senile old *****, he has corrected lampley many times about who is really landing the clean effective punches in a fight.

Maybe that's what he tries to imitate to as he commentates, the casual fans with Merchant and Steward for the hardcore fans.

I've heard Lennox Lewis correct him at times as well.

The worst thing is when freakin' Kellerman corrects Lewis, or tries to. As if his opinion carries as much weight. I just want Lenox to lean over and ***** slap him.

Jim does call misses as hits. In fairness, though, it's a lot harder than it looks to call the fight and watch the action as carefully as those of us who get to sit back and do nothing focus on the competition.

If that was the only thing on the ppv, I'd pay the $59.95 in a heart beat!

It also has to be taken into account that Lampley cannot always see everything we're seeing and vice versa depending on where he has his eyes focused. Alot of the time the angle has to do with the commentators point of view, as well as a judge's point of view.

It really is pretty amazing. Whatever you want to say about Toney, he deserves huge accolades for pulling this one out. And in what fashion!!!

you can never go by what those guys are saying, or else you would end up favoring the wrong fighter! I remember george foreman in the cotto-torres fight saying that torres punches staggers cotto but cottos best punch wouldn't hurt torres and juz as he was sayin that cotto dropped torres w/a right, that was in the 6th rd. Also Mr. Foreman said malignaggi should be praised for fighting w/cotto for 12rds when it was a one sided brutal beating in which malignaggi suffered a broken jaw.

This happened in the Cotto vs Paulie fight too, can't recall the names of the commentators but one of them corrects the other and highlights this is not amateur boxing; "We only score good clean meaningful punches".

This guy did have Paulie winning after 4 rounds, which considering the knockdown highlighted his stupidity.

very true it was like the sixth round or so that one of those idiots actually had paulie up ahead like 3 or 4 points! Commentators clearly choose they're favs way before the fight even takes place!
