I didn't get into boxing until the 80's so I was used to Budweiser logos all over the ring & ads throughout the arenas. I've been watching fights from the late 60's & love the clean ring canvas & darker arenas. The Garden especially looks great. The fighter shave basic trunks with no advertising on them. Also , the fights are shot wider. Today's cameras are much sharper, cover more angles, & bring us closer to the action but I enjoy seeing the wide shots of thr action in older fights. I'm not saying the presentation was better then but I do think it's a nice look.

    I couldn't agree more...I'm always nostalgic for the 60's and early 70's...mid 70's too.

There's just something about watching a fight in the venue they were meant to be watched..........the old fight clubs. The Blue Horizon, the Olympic..........now it's just a ring thrown into a banquet hall in some casino. Not exactly the same.

In terms of atmosphere are there any fights from that era you'd recommend?

Have a gander at Zarate-Zamora.........now granted, insane drunk people didn't ALWAYS pop out of the stands to climb into the ring back then, but you were looking for atmosphere, so..........

I've got a list of fights to choose from. Mathis - Chuvalo, Ortiz - Laguna, & Mando Ramos - Sugar Ramos. The latter 2 fights feature boxers I've never actually watched. All seem to have good atmospheres.

I've read of the legendary lighter weight battles that took place on the west coast in the 70's. I need to check some of those out. I've seen the Zarate - Zamora war though!!

I love watching late 60's early 70's fights from the garden too. Tiger-Foster, Frazier-Quarry, FOTC, Buchanan-Duran, Ali-Bonevena etc. Just loved the look with the red velvet ropes and the people ringside.

The bouts at the garden back then always feel epic. The intros of all the boxers in attendance added a touch of class. The dark backdrop always makes the fights more dramatic.

Boxing was so much more of a mainstream sport then. Just a completely different feel. Every fight seemed to matter to fans.

I caught a fight last night & the ring canvas was covered in Corona logos. I mean absolutely covered! It was tough to watch the fight because it was so distracting. At least the old Budweiser logos didn't cover every square inch.

It's UFC BS now, boxing's on the back burner now (for its own reasons). I miss the old days (the Gillette Friday nighters, WWOS Saturday afternoon title bouts, getting a haircut with dad at the barbershop with a Ring Magazine on the table with ONLY (and rightfully so) a Champion and 10 Top 10 contenders.
Sidebar: In 1950 the three most popular sports were:
Baseball-Boxing-Horse Racing. How things have changed.
