I agree. Thanks for sharing the story.

I also believe it's quite probable that HBO didn't want to renew his contract after 9/11. There was a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment going around in the US and there still is today.

    Come on.
Many people tuned in to watch Hamed hoping he would lose.
He was arrogant and annoyed people but was exciting too.

HBO would have told him to fight higher quality opponents after Calvo as it would have made HBO money as he was a big name still.
It's about money not anti-Muslim sentiment and I just don't think Hamed wanted to fight anymore, especially against top quality boxers and HBO were not going to pay him to fight lower quality boxers as it wouldn't sell as he had been exposed by Barrera.

So? I meant he was never going to get the big endorsement and deals after Barrera unless he fought him again or someone else of that calibre.

It just proves after the Barrera fight he was never going to be offered the money he used to get and he was going to have to fight more high quality boxers to get a good deal with HBO.

He didn't want that so he walked away.
It has nothing to do with anti-Muslim sentiment.

In what way was it humiliating?, it was hardly a shutout against a man who had only ever lost to Jnr Jones and Morales

Yes, of course Hamed was disliked by many and a lot of people simply wanted to see him take a beating.
But after 9/11 there would have been a whole new group of people who would have hated him not just because he was cocky but because he was a brown skin Arab, who in almost every inteview he gave praised "Allah" and went on about how great Islam is.

Do you remember the Barrera fight ?. Nas had Islam written on the back of his trunks and actually recited a Koran verse before the fight started.

Do you really think this would have been possible right after 9/11. Come on now.
