There wasn't this long between big fights last year - and I appreciate that even more now when there's nothing going on. I thought boxing would kick on from the wonderfulness last year. Alas, no.
I refuse to complain about a year which has had Casamayor v Katsidis, Pacquiao v Marquez II, and Cotto v Margarito so far, and still has Casamayor v Marquez, Diaz v Katsidis, Hatton v Malignaggi, and Guzman v Campbell to come- as well as probable fights involving Margarito, De La Hoya, Paul Williams, Pacquiao, and Haye at heavyweight. Of course I'm disappointed we didn't get Calzaghe v Pavlik as well, but still a good solid year IMO, no letdown.
Next month is a lightweight battle and most of them are free I believe cant wait cause this month sucks.
Last year was a great year for boxing but I think it did a lot of its better fights over the last quarter of the year. I want to say Pavlik-Taylor, Calzaghe-Kessler, Cotto-Mosley, Hatton-Mayweather, and others happened the last few months of the year so there is still time for this year yet. This year has also had to deal with the Olympics so we've had a weak month-two month stretch because of it. This year has been decent and still some time left but will probably still fall short of last year. Just a matter of how short.
There was an even bigger gap last year around this time. After Daniel Ponce De Leon KO'd Rey Bautista at the beginning of August '07, all of the September fights got cancelled except Taylor-Pavlik on September 27th. Vitali-McCline, Dawson-Diacanou, and whoever Peter was supposed to fight ALL got cancelled in September.
and you dont get to see Floyd running around the ring for the rest of the year ,that alone makes it a great year for boxing.
