Why did HBO stop broadcasting boxing? Their buildup and shows were the best around. Nowadays it all feels too corporate and sterile.
They had money tied up in boxers that couldn’t draw fly to **** or fighters that had draw but wanted layup fight cause they had gauranteed money regardless of who they fought. They were bleeding money and the exec finally said enough.
They couldn't/wouldn't deal with Haymon, who took a large stock of American fighters to Showtime and the time buys he was doing a few years ago on the networks (which didn't work out). Canelo then signed a huge deal with DAZN. Hearn arrived on the scene in the U.S. TR went to ESPN. So basically HBO got squeezed out of the picture and lacked the desire to jump back in.
Larry merchant is missed in every aspect, should be more prominently featured especially at his old age now, Emmanuel steward made it interesting even when he was biased one way or another, along with jim, Roy with his irregular laugh both which were either a hit or miss, towards the years starting from 2015 things were getting stale & bad, calling fights in dinky arenas by that time they had already lost their charm and were irritating to listen to, along with the production being very low budget.
Agree completely. HBO’s commentary was perfect for many legendary fights. DAZN on the other hand are the worst out of all the “big” networks right now (Showtime, Fox, ESPN) Their production values are simply not up to scratch, DAZN fights just don’t have that “big fight” feel. I cut them some slack at first but they’ve been in this business for like 4 years, there’s no excuse for it now.
DAZN's team are genuinely awful But at least they honest enough over the weekend to not cater to the cash cow as they have done previously
