I need a boxing Sherlock Holmes. I acquired an old 8mm home movie of a boxing match. It is in its original box with the original address from the owner when they shipped it to Kodak to have it developed. It was mailed by a Bertha Iko and the stamps used were issued in May 1940. Bertha Iko's return address was listed as Newburgh, NY. I looked her up on Ancestry.com and she is listed as living there but having moved to New Jersey in 1941 upon being married. On the box is written: "Madison" "Fight" and "Soose." Billy Soose had 5 fights at Madison Square Garden: Mauriello, Overlin, Vigh 1 and 2, and Abrams (all during the time period in question). The obvious choice would be that this fight is either Soose-Vigh 1 or 2. Vigh was from Newburgh, NY and actually lived down the street from Bertha Iko at one time. The film depicts highlights at least 8 rounds of a bout and shows two knockdowns. This would tend to indicate it is the second Vigh fight but the knockdowns dont match photos I have of the knockdowns from that fight. The first fight only featured one knockdown (although the first knockdown on the film may not have been called even though to me it clearly should have been). Another troubling point is that one of the fighters appears to have some writing on his trunks. From what I can tell from the photos I have of both fights there was no writing on either fighters trunks during these fights. I cant identify the writing until I have the film transferred as the size of the projection is very small. The possibility remains that its actually footage of a couple of fights, which is throwing off identification. Or that it is indeed Vigh and that it came from his collection but that the film is of him against another fighter and was placed in the case that once belonged to a film he had of himself against Soose. Anyone got any photos of Soose-Vigh 1 and 2? Here is what is easily found on the net: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxNDIz/z/HhQAAOxy3NBSdvo1/$(KGrHqVHJ!0FJYVY8jhiBSdvo0Wn6w~~60_57.JPG http://search.getty.edu/gateway/search?dir=s&q=[Boxering+Match+Between+Billy+Soose+and+Ernie+Vigh%2C+Madison+Square+Garden%2C+New+York+City]] as well as a couple of newspaper photos I found on fulton history and the photos from Ring Magazine's coverage.
