I know that each "governing body" has rules for how they rank fighters and which fighters they choose to exclude from their rankings, but can someone explain to me how they are all so different? WBA for example has Daniel Dubois ranked #1, which is laughable at this point in his career, but doesn't have Joe Joyce even ranked. IBF has Charles Martin #2 (No #1?????), and Anthony Joshua...who just held their belt....#5? Help me understand this please.
They all make the rules up as they go along. They put certain boxers in particular positions depending on which bouts they have lined up, so that the bouts are merited and can be marketed in a certain way. It all comes back to money, it is not a meritocratic system obviously. Mark de Mori is ranked something like 8 with WBA after having beaten several men called Laszlo.
It’s all about money. All you need to know is who will bring the largest purse. WBC for example takes a percentage of purse. So their best interest is to rank the fighter that can fatten their bottom line.
They are best ignored. I only look at them now when I want a laugh. If you are looking for a purely objective resume based rankings system, I like this: https://premierboxingorganisation.com/heavyweight-200 If you prefer a more subjective, but educated H2H rankings system, TBRB are quite good: https://tbrb.org/rankings
They get fighters to fight for their "international" titles or other crappy belts, winning these belts gets you ranked.
If you don't understand it just means that you are sane. I know a lot of regional and minor belts associated with an org come with top 15 rankings. And titleists for one org can't be ranked by another. Other than that I have no idea
I'm looking forward to the quadrilogy with Laszlo Toth. When he KO's him a fourth time the WBA should bump him to seventh for sure.
