In the early 90s promoter Art Dorr ran a whole series of "Toughman" shows, where guys would basically come off the street and compete in boxing matches. Butterbean was the top of the heap in this competition and then Dorr took him pro, fighting only 4 round fights. He fought NOTHING but stiffs in fights that some have alleged were fixed, and then got beat by NY 1-6 tomato can Mitchell Rose. After this, he fought more stiffs, including a just-out-of-rehab McNeely. Butterbean was basically pure entertainment, but not a serious fighter. If you don't take it as serious boxing and recognize its entertainment value, it has its place. Purists hate this crap though.
Butterbean was in real good shape for this one!!! He was taking no chances with the great McNeeley and that Cocoon of Horror!
Butterbean WAS just an "entertainer" fighter, a freakshow fighter. He drew in crowds with this notoriety and was usually handed some fodder/fish to beat the tar out of. Everyone loves to see a big fat man beat up an undersized guy, cuz they just wanna see if this ridiculous underdog could actually get to the fat man. Traditional circus act. he became D-list celebrity with this notoriety. He's obviously very heavy-handed but lacking technique and stamina...
i vote in matching Butterbean against that 52yr old Iranian WBA NABA undefeated champion. I give Butterbean 5 to 1 odds
Butterbean was calling out Tyson like every month it seemed back in the late 80s. Would've been a better fight than any of Mike's other tomato can wins though.
