But since has fought just bums

    Jojo Dan?

    Gavin?

    Brazier?

Wtf is that. What a disgrace he is holding that belt hostage

He needs to be fighting Thurman, Garcia, Khan, Bradley

JojoDan and Bizier are mandatories. The guy got stab. After Bizier, then there should some big fight, but mandatories have the right to go for the belt.

To be fair, Bizier just beat Lawson in an eliminator. :conf

This is no worse than Mohammedi getting his crack at Kovalev. (which he justly deserved, even though it was always going to be a huge mismatch)

I wonder if Eddie Hearn will make this the headline of a PPV card.

Though as an American, is doesn't matter to me.

The only guys that acknowledge mandatories exist. The WBO never made Pacquiao fight his mandos and the WBC let Floyd do what ever he felt. So yeah I hate to see it but if there are no big names in the 147 IBF top 10 then he can wipe out the entire list and never be stripped.

Pacquiao and Mayweather shouldn't have received favorable treatment, but they did. Nobody else is Pacquiao & Mayweather.

Kovalev is a huge name these days and even he needed to face Mohammedi.

Within the last year, Guillermo Rigondeax, Miguel Cotto, Demetrius Andrade and Floyd Mayweather Jr. off the top of my head were all stripped for not facing a specific mandatory challenger, not facing any mandatory challenger with the allotted time demanded by the org in question, or not paying the mandatory sanctioning fees.

There are (and ought to be) consequences for not facing your mandatory, even for big names.

So we get to see fights like this for the rest of his career?

Depends, as usual, on how the eliminator situation and rankings shake out, doesn't it?

Mandatory challengers do sometimes work out to be the best available challengers. At worst they're usually top 15-20 at least. (maybe 25-30ish at the stretchiest)

Better than having no system. :conf At least this one is something, and while flawed, is right a bit more than a broken clock's twice a day.

It would be better if fighters were to fight 4 times year and using some of these mandatories as stay busy fights.

Agreed. Since we don't live in a perfect world, though, I'm happy to see timely mandatory defenses (which necessarily have to be selected from the org in question's top 15...translating, generally, to a top 50ish h2h contender in the division) enforced - because the alternative is an endless string of voluntary defenses (who can be unrated by any org and like 300th or 400th down any reasonable list h2h in the division)

It'd be nice to see a good fight out of some of these guys once in a while, is all I'm saying. You know I'm right. Brook isn't the only one. Just seems like baxing has too many guys who are willing to milk their titles like they are the last teat on the planet.

Absolutely true but an uninspiring mandatory is always going to be more palatable to me than a cherry-picked voluntary. (remember when Haymon tried dubbing Rod Salka a world title challenger by waving his magic wand on Garcia's behalf? :-()

At least there's a system in place with man. defenses, unlike voluntaries which are completely unchecked and leave a much higher margin for error in terms of quality check on who's vying for a title.

Even in the case of a Bizier or Mohammedi where the mandatory system pans out with a dud with someone hopeless technically having maneuvered their way to be #1 contender, they're okay with me on principle as in theory a mandatory will generally be vastly superior to a voluntary defense. (bar in the case of big-money super-fights, where it behooves the champ to face someone challenging for the added financial reward)

A lot of people look at Lawson fighting Bizier as a cherry pick and look how that turned out.

    Fair point.

    Provodnikov vs. Algieri, too.

...and not only had Algieri not established himself to earn a #1 contender position at 140lb, he actually had never even debuted at the weight! (literally never came in at or below 140lb a single time before he challenged Provodnikov)
