I didn't do any scoring of the fight, and don't believe either fighter did anything well enough or consistant enough to claim any real victory.

That being said, I though Joe would fight much more convincingly than he did. I know its trite to say, but most of his blows were somewhere in the range of non-effective to mildly effective. I'm sorry but to claim some compubox victory on Bernard with that type of punching shouldn't bring great pride to him.

Bernard ultimately could not sustain his superiority in the ring, but I haven't got a shadow of a doubt in my mind who the superior boxer is, given a prime for prime situation.

I don't think this fight points to Calzaghe being an overated Euro-bum fighter like many posters will say here. But I am confident in saying he had a very off night, and that I overated him coming in.

I agree. Saw it the same.

Credit where credit is due, the guy won. But not impressively. Not insomuch as to increase his current or all time p4p ranking. And in relation to a H2H prime for prime match-up with Hops, this fight does nothing more than favour Hopkins.

Bernard has the skills to make anyone look bad.

I predicted that Calzaghe would win the fight, but would lose a SD based on his "slapping punches" and how they would be scored here in the states. That almost came true.

I don't think it was a great showing by either fighter, but congrats to Calzaghe for pulling it out.

Agreed. He was my P4P #3 before the fight, and thats where he stays. I was extreemly tempted to put him or Pac in the #1 spot because I don't tolerate the bull**** that Mayweather is pulling in my P4P list for long, but that didn't do anything close to justify pulling Floyd out of there.

KG, who's the chick in the avatar?

  7. A fair and decent post mate. Just remember though Bernard's very good at ruining styles, it's what he's know for.

The last guy that looked good against Hopkins was Roy Jones. I can't understand why people are surprised it was ugly.

Hopkins didn't give Calzaghe a chance to be impressive, he was very defensive and did a lot of holding too. Calzaghe did what he had to do to win.

also people age differently. it's kinda unfair in some ways to joe. i mean most fighters are out of their prime by early-mid 30's. while hopkins definately isn't prime anymore, joe might not be that far off hopkins as far as out of prime goes.

look at tyson, he peaked in his early 20's! also the lower weight devisions seem to peak in their mid 20's it appears.

also remember this was joe's first fight at light heavy. he could have picked a top 30 fighter to get used to the weight difference but chose to take on a really crafty (if somewhat dirty) fighter in b-hop!

It was just an awkward fight. Their styles didn't mesh well in there. I though Calzaghe won clearly, just by outhustling Bernard who ultimately couldn't get off with his shots enough.

considering he's supposed to be an ATG and he's fighting someone in the definite twilight of his career, i don't see how it's absurd to expect more fro Calzaghe.

Even so, that wasn't the Calzaghe I saw against Kessler or Lacy. That fighter was dictating all facets of the fight- both mental and physical. Bernard took the mental aspect away from him for at least half the fight and scored a KD I would have never, ever expected.
