Nobody was saying that when Rahman had the WBC not very long ago, or when Shannon Briggs had the WBO. The very fact that both those 90's guys were belt holders, and fighting guys like Maskaev, just PROVED that the division was in a terrible state. Honestly, if both the Klitchkos retired forever today, there would be a whole host of guys in their late 30's and early 40's coming out of retirement with a real chance of being champion.
In the past they same has been said about heavyweight division. If USTV keeps boycotting important heavyweight fights the division will go down in America, but the world is getting wake-up call.
thank you CAPTAIN OBVIOUS but the whole division is horrible with the exception of a few you brag about Dimentrenko, he has fought absolutely NO ONE chagev, ibragimov, valeuv, povetkin, mascaev, lycovich yeah, they are all world class bad ass's klitschos are the only thing that is good about this era....
The era isn't weak. America has this thing where if we don't dominate something we create a scenario in which it becomes irrelevant, almost as if it is a nonentity. Just look at soccer. The thing is that America used to have a monopoly on the heavyweight division. Now that this is no longer the case the heavyweight division is branded as being "weak" or "boring" to name a few. It's interesting when you go on to consider that the old American domination was pretty much guaranteed since there were no fighters from the former Soviet Bloc to contend with them.
You can pin the perception of the heavyweights on American "bias" all day long, but it's only in the last 18 to 24 months or so that any even remotely interesting contenders have begun to emerge in the division. Post Lewis, it was an absolute wasteland.
I'm not American, and I only have to use my own eyes to see the difference. Remove the Klitchkos from the current era. Remove Lewis, Tyson Holy and Bowe from the 90's. Do you really think that guys like Ruddock, Mercer, Tua, Bruno, McCall, Golota, Moorer - not to mention the "cocaine era" guys like Pinklon Thomas, Dokes, Tucker etc wouldn't beat their equivalents in the rankings today???
It is a strong era. Before only a limited number of countries had pro boxing. Now it is worldwide. It is really global.
If you always handpick and take out the best of any era, it looks weak. Take out Joe Louis and a bartender like Galento could have been champ. Take out Ali out of his eras and actually it would have been a lot less exciting and popular. Frazier, Liston, Foreman, Norton etc all had boring personalities. ALi's dynamic persence livened the whole era and made it special. Let's be honest, Foreman and Frazier had nothing special in the charisma department back then. It's like pro wrestling, it exploded when the dynamic personality of Hulk Hogan came along before that it was a fringe sport with Bob Backlund as champ. If any ALi type personality came along now HWT boxing would be huge in America. Or if Tiger Woods quit golf and became a KO artist as a HWT with Steward training him, HWT boxing would be hugely popular again in the US.
