After Ernie Schaaf was killed in 1933, there was a story that the New York commission were going to institute a super-heavyweight class, on the grounds that it was unfair and dangerous for a regular heavyweight to be sent in against a monster like Carnera. This would have had the effect of banning Carnera's shot at Jack Sharkey's title, which was already planned for later that year. Obviously the logic of the move was hard to sustain since Sharkey had already beaten Carnera once. But it was understandable that they felt they had to do something, with the sport coming under heavy scrutiny following Schaaf's death.
