When someone on this forum compared Rocky Marciano to the 1972 Miami Dolphins. They were both undefeated, but did it beating less than stellar opposition and having many close calls. Well, in honor of the Superbowl, let's have a thread on comparing boxers to NFL teams. I give you four more. Muhammad Ali and the Pittsburgh "Steel Curtain" Steelers in the late 1970s. Both achieved multiple titles and had a fierce rivalry with another great opponent (Ali's was Joe Frazier and Steelers' was the Dallas Cowboys). Both are arguably considered the best HW ever and at least for the Steelers in '78, the best team ever, respectively. Joe Louis and the 1985 "86 D" Chicago Bears. Both steamrolled their opponents during their careers, and both had a major setback that temporarily halted their meteoric rises. Joe Louis was beaten by Max Schmeling in 1936 ending his unbeaten streak, and the Bears lost to the Miami Dolphins ending their unbeaten streak. However, those loses turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to both, because Louis became more focused and went to the win the title, avenge Schmeling and become arguably the best HW ever, and the Bears became more focused and never lost another game that season, and also became arguably the best single-season team ever. Mike Tyson and the 2007 New England Patriots. Like the last comparison, both also had a meteoric rise and was far above any other fighter or team around them. Both were destined to be THEE greatest heavyweight and single-season team ever. But Tyson was upset by 42-1 underdog ----, and the Patriots will be upset by 14 point underdog ----... Buster Douglas and the 2007 New York Giants!! Both have a mediocre career and regular season, but they shock the world by exposing Tyson in Tokyo and the Patriots in the superbowl and literally come out of nowhere to have a fairytale career and season. Go Giants!!!!!!!! This content is protected
Congrats, Clay. That near-sack of Manning turned skin-of-teeth completion was for the ages. Rocky Marciano's undefeated record grows in stature as we have just witnessed how difficult it is to preserve that "0". The Giants' defense was simply better than the Pats' last night. The Pats failed to come through at the moment of truth. Marciano always found the way to win. Respect to the Rock and I'm gonna get myself a Giants jersey.
Nope the Pats are Larry Holmes, both almost had that certain unbeating record beat for GOOD. But both slip and lost when it matter.
