I have never seen him fight but I am led to believe he is the best prospect in the middleweight division. Is this correct?
I do know however that he has some wins over some sterling names in the amateurs, including Koborov, Dirrell, Lemieux, Bute (by stoppage) and Andy Lee. Impressive by anyone's standards.
There are a lot of good prospects in the middleweight division. But yeah, he's a good fighter, somewhat amateur Euro style, better on offense than on defense. There are about six really good middleweight prospects at the moment (him, Pirog, Lemieux, Korobov, Jacobs, N'Jikam) and Golovkin is one of them. But there's a ton of video of him up on youtube if you just look for it. As a pro though, he's lagging behind because of these contractual disputes I think. His level of competition isn't anywhere near as good as some of the other guys, and it's not like they've been fighting worldbeaters either. Also, he has yet to go past 8 rounds because he's been matched too easily and thus he keeps knocking guys out quick. He's supposed to fight for the WBO title soon, possibly against Anthony Mundine or Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam. Either way, it would be a huge step up and will tell us a lot about him.
Cheers. Good info. One thing I notice about him is his age, he obviously went pro relatively late. I can't find much on youtube that relates to his boxing style. What areas is he strong in?
That's the safest bet in the sport right now. Mundine wouldn't be found in the same area code as Golovkin, let alone the same ring as him.
From what I'm hearing, Golovkin is the head of the pack when it comes to the prospects coming up at 160 (Pirog, Guerrero, N'Jikam, Jacobs, Lemieux, Korobov, Lee, Zbik). He was a pretty good amateur.. Went to the Olympics... We shall see...
