If you win fights by holding and pretending to be hit by low-blows so you can get a rest than Hopkins won this fight! Hopkins was like a character in a mortal combat game but he only had ONE MOVE and that was to throw a right and then grab, that was all he had and he kept doing it AGAIN and AGAIN. Hopkins was embarassing in this fight.
I was surprised watching it again just how often Calzaghe landed clean straight lefts, I think they won him the bulk of the rounds. And Hopkins was an embarrassment in this fight, the fake low blow acting was even worse the 2nd time around. The fact the rest went on to win him that round was even more sickening.
Oh, there's no question Calzaghe was getting through with that left. Hopkins really got swamped by all the activity in the middle rounds, to the point where he was having a very hard time getting off himself. Hopkins faking the low blow was no more embarrassing than Calzaghe turning a spin into an opportunity to express gay pride. The whole fight was pretty disappointing.
I have different tastes. That fight is one of the most unique in boxing - it's a very special fight, I think so anyway. The mental battle in that ring was brilliant, the adaptability, the subtle changes in the fight - really really good. Never heard of it.
Just when you thought the Calzaghe-Hopkins discussions were finally ova, this terd of a thread appears :-(.
No way i'm watching that again but I remember having Calzaghe comfortably ahead. I can't really imagine how people could have Hopkins winning it, perhaps it might be the commentators influence or something.
my scorecard was 116-112 second time round.-to calzaghe. still have no real idea how some have it to hopkins. Calzaghe was made to look amatuerish at times but he, in my view, quite clearly outworked hopkins. hopkins couldnt handle the pace in the second part of the fight. He did very little in some of those rounds to the tune of --- look to land the straight right, hold as long as he could(get a break stop calzaghe working).........40 seconds later try the same thing.....etc and some call for a rematch!!!!!!!!
Hopkins faked getting hit low and Cortez let him do it and gave him a long rest when he needed it most. I see this as somewhat of a concession by Hopkins to Calzaghe. This is only respectable if you respect Francisco Lorenzo's tactics in his DQ win over Soto, also a Cortez fight. Calzaghe beat Hopkins and he deserved the victory. He should have rematched Hopkins though in Wales, its a shame.
Man I don't see how the hell can you give Hopkins the edge in this fight, not even a draw. Calzaghe clearly beat him.
Oh man, Taylor vs Spinks was dreadful to watch. It's a shame that Calzaghe vs Hopkins turned out to be a real stinker as well, as both of them have been in some highly entertaining fights over their careers. As they say - styles make fights.
