I hadn`t watched these two fights for ages, although both fights were very different, they had one thing in common, they were technical masterpieces.

4 excellent fighters all in (or close to) their prime, all different attributes & styles but wonderful to watch.

The level of technical boxing put on by Whitaker & McGirt was great, made even better because it was competitive, a high level title fight between the two best welterweights in the world, you don`t need blood & guts when you have fights like these.

Chavez-Taylor was a war, this was of the blood & guts type but the amount of technique & skill showed by both men while trying to impose their style (& will) on each other was tremendous by the top two light-welterweights in the world.... this is the perfect fight to show both the casual & hardcore fan, deservedly named the fight of the decade for the 90s.

    :good

People highly overrate how much Chavez got hit. I did myself at first but was amazed how Chavez was slipping punchings when I watched it a year ago. I am awed by guys like Duran, Toney, Napoles, Chavez, and Sanchez that can mix it up and manage to still mount solid D simultaneously.

Both great fights to watch and I would add McGirt-Whitaker 2. Best display of combination punching I have ever seen from Pea. All great fights.

It's funny, but I also watched Chavez v Taylor last night. I agree with everything you wrote.

You have to feel for Meldrick...the kid was too brave for his own good. (Correct stoppage though, imo.)

I agree, Chavez defense for an attacking fighter was brilliant, he slipped a **** load of Taylor`s punches, he took a lot too but we`ve all heard this, what we don`t always hear is the amount of shots slipped by Chavez.
I used to think he had n off night in this fight, mostly due to how dominant he was in all his other prime fights, now I think it was a very good performance vs a great, talented young fighter that fought out of his skin on the night.

Ps. Whitaker-McGirt 2 is one of my favourite fights to watch, strictly from being a fan of Whitaker point of view tho, it was a complete masterclass & one sided after the 4th round, it`s not the fight I`d watch if I was in the mood for a good competitive fight.

Yeah, closer fight than the commentators would have you believe but no doubt Taylor had it won if he would have got on his bike in the last round, he tried to close the show like a warrior but unfortunately he was in against one of the toughest, proudest & most determined fighters in history, a fighter that needed the KO.... Chavez needed that knockout & Meldrick Taylor went straight into the jaws of the lion, real shame for Taylor, wonderful victory for Chavez, fair stoppage IMO.

    True

I think he only gave Chavez round 2, he scored 6 even & all the rest he gave to Taylor.

Larry & co aka the HBO crew were just as bad, they gave Taylor the first 9 rounds, they probably thought it was safe to give Chavez rounds 10 & 11 thinking Meldrick had it in the bag.
