Jones 1, 2,5,6, Ali 3,4,7,9,10 Round 8 even Ali was certaintly the busier fighter and his fast hands that he throws from a distance probably inlfuenced the judges even though a large majority were slipped or paried by Jones. Tough fight Ali got the nod. That's how I scored the fight off of youtube right now on mute.
Watched this a couple of weeks ago and while there were some close rounds, I had clay up 9-1 giving jones only the 1st. Decent fight and jones was a very good fighter but I thought clay was in control throughout.
I think it is very interesting how different people can see a fight so differently. Clean punches is the number 1 scoring criterium for me. And Ali barely landed anything in this particular fight except for the last 2 rounds. I have a hard time understanding why you can score this fight for Ali. But is all good.
I haven't watched this one in a while though I'm planning on watching it again soon but I remember always scoring it pretty one sided to Ali. I remember it being pretty close and a very good fight but Ali seemed to win the majority of the rounds, I'll watch it tonight or tomorrow and give my opinion. Doug Jones was a very good fighter who could give any heavyweight who wasn't to big and strong for him a lot of trouble. His problems came for the most part against big power punchers. was going to post a link to his fight vs Bob Foster who is arguably the greatest light heavyweight of all time but since I just became a member here I'm not aloud but I'd recommend any boxing fan to check that fight out on youtube its a great fight/performance of Doug Jones.
Just watched the fight and my opinion hasn't changed I feel Ali clearly won it. I scored the bout 6-3-1 this time. The first round I gave to Jones for landing that one really big right, the next three I felt were clearly to Ali. He peppered Jones pretty good, Jones landed good shots as well but not as many as Ali. The 5th and 6th were pretty even rounds. Ali continued to pepper Jones but Jones landed quite a few good shots in both rounds. I gave the 5th to Jones very slightly and the 6th a draw, I try not to score even rounds but I couldn't pick a winner in that one. Ali won the 7th pretty clearly then the 8th, 9th and 10th are what made the fight a great fight and what made Ali great. Ali was clearly tired and Jones landed very good punches to the body and head in each round that seemed to hurt Ali but Ali just let his hands fly throwing good combinations through out the final three rounds, especially in the 10th. The final three rounds provided great back and forth non stop action and I feel Ali took all three of them by out working Jones, landing many more punches and coming back and taking the play with combinations seemingly everytime Jones would land good punches. Overall a great fight, Jones may have landed the harder punches in the bout but Ali landed many more and plenty of good shots of his own for a hard fought but clear victory IMO.
It was a typical example of an up and coming boxer being pushed to the limit and emerging a better fighter in consequence. Very much like Frazier-Bonavena I,Foreman-Peralta I,and Tyson-Tillis. A close call for the young Ali,but nothing controversial about the scoring in my opinion.
I agree with you about the Young fight.I thought Young won,but not by as much as he beat Norton.Robbery.But also I think the Young and Jones fights were at 2 opposite sides of Alis peak.He wasn't quite there against Young.I only saw the fight once,on BBC the week after it happened, and thought Doug shaded it.Soon after the Jones fight,my uncle virtually predicted what happened against Cooper BEFORE the fight, including the knockdown. But it was a different story 2nd time around. For me,from that point to Alis enforced layoff, nobody would have come close to getting a decision. Not Jones, not Young, not Norton. Those were his prime years, and he lost 3 of them.
Correction.I meant not quite at his peak against Doug Jones. Also I think a bit past peak against Young.
This is how I have it.^^^^^ I remember reading about Ali being asked what his toughest fight was, Liston? Foreman? Frazier?, "Doug Jones" he replied.
