Mikkel Kessler confirmed the hand problem he had during the Calzaghe fight, whilst at the press conference for the weekend's WBA title defence against Andre Ward.

The injured hand, which prevented Mikkel from having a full intense 12 week camp was rumoured at the time, but denied in the post-fight interview as not to discredit Calzaghe's win.

"I hurt my hand and had only two weeks to spar for Calzaghe" Said Kessler, who says that loss will only motivate him further on Saturday night.

"I have had only one defeat and that was to Joe Calzaghe and it still eats at me today. Even thinking about that fight makes me even more motivated. That’s why I am looking at this fight as a second chance to prove that I am the best.

But there will be no mistakes or excuses after this one. I may be 30 but I have a lot of fight left. Saturday night can’t come soon enough." said the Viking Warrior.

He still would have lost. Calazaghe took his heart away in that fight.

2 weeks and a bad hand, yet gave Calzaghe a very hard fight?

in front off 55,000 of welsh?

id have loved to have seen the outcome of a fully fit kessler in denmark against calzone.

Kessler was in the fight for maybe 5 rounds, but he was still losing.

Kessler is a solid fighter, but he's very conventional. Calzaghe is the complete opposite of that.

Calzaghe was not going to lose on that night. He took his game to a level we never saw before. I saw him against Bika and Manfredo and was not sure how to judge him then saw Kessler and became a big fan and saw him beating RJJ and BHOP

He could have sparred for 2 years and it would make no difference.

    Calzaghe > Kessler.

This is probably true, a number of sources have come out with this. Kessler didn't want to confirm it at the time because obviously it would appear bitter and taking credit from Calzaghe.

If you study the fight, Kessler gave himself a lot of opportunities to hit Calzaghe when Calzaghe was in a bad position. If he had more sharpness he might have done better with the chances he had. I scored the fight 8-4 for Calzaghe, 4 rounds is a lot to make up even if we presumed Kessler was not 100%

Plus if there was ever a rematch Calzaghe found the way to cause Kessler trouble and would fight like this from the start.

I still find that fight strange, i have watched it over and over again, and i believe Mikkel is all in there for about 5 rounds, and then he suddenly stops boxing, iam not saying that Calzaghe is not a good boxer, because that is what he is, but still Kessler's performance was not on the level seen in alot of his other fights.

Well there had been no pause in sparring this time, so lets hope we will have a hell of a fight this saturday.

He stopped fighting because despite everything he was doing he didn't feel that he was going to win the fight. Calzaghe is/was just better that night and on any other night. Recent example, Pacquiao made Cotto look average, worse then he's ever looked before in any fight. That's what Great fighters do, they make World class champions look mediocre in comparison.

I like Kessler and he's my pick for Super 6 (assuming he hasn't gotten old or rusty) but he lost fair and square.

This is less legitimate than stating that Calzaghe, without permanently damaged hands and an incompetent referee in the 8th, would have stopped Kessler.

Fact is he didn't - he outworked, outmanoeuvred, outfought and ultimately very clearly outpointed Kessler.

That is the end of the story.
