Imagine if this fight never happened. I know damn well everybody and I would say Maidana would crush him, for obvious reasons.
Maybe because he was a better boxer and Maidana is a crude brawler who almost beat him in a razor close fight which was a split decision. Devon Alexander took Maidana to school and stole his lunch money. He beat him easily. Kudos to Maidana he was never usually in a dull fight.
Had that fight happen at 147 w/ Maidana under Robert Garcia’s tutelage, Khan probably would have gotten severely beaten. But overall it was a very good performance by Khan and he might have been the first to exploit Maidana’s weakness to the body. I would have picked Khan over Bradley after that fight and Bradley vs Alexander. However Bradley was smart to go for the money fights with Pacquaio and Marquez at 147.
Maidana and Bradley were signed to fight. Even had the press conference. Maidana pulled out with an injury. A couple of years ago, he came out and said he was pressured by his management, whom he was struggling with at the time, to fake the injury and get out of the fight. Might have been a great one.
Who did Maidana beat to be so highly regarded in the first place? Old Morales, Broner, Ortiz? Sure he gave a faded Mayweather a tough fight first time but looking good when losing is still losing. Khan for all his flaws was simply the slightly better fighter and Maidana wasn't good enough to captialise when he did have Khan hurt.
If you can't believe he beat Maidana, then I'm afraid you aren't recognizing how good and talented Khan was. On any given day, Khan could beat any fighter at welterweight. He was a workhorse in terms of activity, he had some of the fastest hands in boxing. Fans like to make fun of Khan because of the KO losses, but they fail to recognize how good he was and how tough he was to beat. Fans routinely act like Khan was some bum. Khan was a tremendous fighter in his prime.
