I strongly dislike the way he's been acting, but I can't help but get excited when he fights, especially when we don't want him to win.... He doesn't have great skills, but the very fact that you know... .. that any moment... .... that one big shot could come and he delivers a devastating knockout. He doesn't need to throw much to keep you interested. That's what makes him unique. He sucks but is also good at the same time. I really hope he gets over this tantrum he's been throwing and starts fighting again, because in reality... he is one of the most exciting fighters out there. Say what you want about him, you know if you look deep in your heart, you love when he fights because of the excitement of that potential brutal KO. If Wilder gets another shot vs the Undisputed champ, we'll all be shitting ourselves but also madly excited that he's going to throw a big punch and walk away undisputed. He has entertainment value.
If he ever does fight again, as much as I very much dislike his post Fury fight antics I'll be watching with great interest.
After the two Fury losses (you know he lost that first fight even though he was gifted a draw), especially the brutal second fight, I think he needs to win a couple fights to earn a shot at the title. AJ and Fury appear to be headed for at least two fights (if you believe the news of the contract) and if their first fight is close, you know they will do it again. Usyk took step aside money and is fighting Joyce for a shot at the belts so Wilder is most likely in line behind the winner of their fight so he’s going to have to wait a while. I don’t hate Wilder and share your fascination regarding his power. His behavior after the last fight was bizarre and troubling but fans will forget as long as he proves the old Wilder is still not gone for good. The only way this can be proven is in the ring. I saw a recent piece on ESPN from Max and Steven A. Smith talking about Wilder and how much he deserves a shot at the winner of AJ-Fury, totally discounting the other more deserving fighters in the cue. Wilder looked like a broken man after his brutal and resounding loss. There is no getting around that without Wilder proving he’s still a dangerous fighter. For Wilder, this is a time for action, not words. He needs to get back into the ring and beat a credible opponent. Before the Fury fight, many fans considered Wilder a bum killer because he made his name by beating so many low talent outmatched opponents. It’s hard to argue that he was not a bum killer. Beating another bum or two while he waits for the big money rematch is pointless. Wilder needs to prove he can beat legitimate HW’s to earn a shot at the title. He sounds like an entitled child, demanding something he has not earned. The solution to his problems is within his grasp, I hope he proves people wrong and gets back in the ring. Sitting on the sidelines whining for a fight is a bad look for a former champ.
I'm not a big Wilder fan because he has an abysmal resume, but it's always fun to watch a guy knock the soul out of his opponents even if they are tomato cans.
A very hard one to rate for sure. You all know why. In term of the excitement he brings in the ring; he is genuinely in my top 10 of all time. In term of boxing skills, he is outside the top 500. In term of accomplishment, at the end of the top 100, he beat a bunch of tomato cans found in the trash and and a skeleton, but you can't deny the fact that he held one of the most prestigious belt for 5 years! Very exciting to watch, but his horrible competition , skills and the 2 fury fights brings his rating down.
Sounds like you have the kind of love for Wilder that Mike W had throbbing for men’s milk and Bruce Lee. If only you had written your post in bold red font. On topic, do I enjoy watching Wilder stretcher out bums? Yes, who doesn’t. Do I rate him as elite though? No of course not. If truth be told there are more than 2-3 HWs out there who beat him at this point.
I'm so ashamed of some of the posters who turned their back on Deontay Wilder in these complicated times. It wasn't his fault that Mark Breland sabotaged his campaign by putting in hidden dumbbell plates, in that stupid transformers costume. Then there was that white towel incident, and the padded gloves that Hatton tampered with.
I'm a Wilder fan as well, even despite his poor fundamentals and delusional outbursts. I really hope these two AJ v Fury fights start a renaissance within the heavyweight division where the best don't stop fighting the best. Wilder v Ruiz, Wilder v AJ, Fury v Ruiz, and throw Usyk in there too. Let's bring back those golden eras of the 70s and 90s.
