I know there will be a whole lot of disagreeing with this but here is my theory. We all know Floyd used to be a way more offensively minded fighter in his younger days and then he started injuring his hands from punching. This caused Floyd to have to go to a "plan b" which is what he is today, a more calculating, strategic counterpuncher because he can't blast his opponents like he used to. A perfect example of the old Floyd was when he fought Arturo Gatti (RIP). He completely beat the **** out of Gatti, and it wasn't his new "boring" style, that was a damn entertaining fight, all hate aside. Now imagine if he had that same aggressiveness vs Judah, Oscar, Mosley or even Ortiz which we will see. And I know people will say "He brought the fight to Mosley" but how many 3+ combos did he throw in that fight? Anyways, case in point because the more you throw the more opportunities for counters there are, Floyd would've been caught and beaten had he not hurt his hands.
interesting way to look at things Do you think he would have developed his supreme boxing skills if he had the sturdy hands to "bang away"?:think
Floyd still would have fought carefully against guys like Oscar. He was aggressive and very careful vs Corrales
Not completely because he would have been able to rely on his hands. boxers tend to rely on whatever physical attributes they have, and in alot of cases it leads to there demise(Jones Jr, Paul Williams etc.). Floyd doesn't necessarily fall into this category but I believe he developed a certain "craftyness" because he couldn't unload the way he wanted to. You think Marquez would've lasted against the Floyd that destroyed Gatti? One more thing, his skills are not in question here, his style is.
He's always been the same fighter. Combined with the hand issues, moving up in weight and fighting an onslaught of iron chinned opposition led to his "new style" of less power and less punch output. He either a) didn't/doesn't have the confidence to gun for KO's vs. these bigger opponents or b) realized he wasn't going to actually stop Baldomir, de la Hoya, Marquez, Mosley, all guys there is no shame in not KO'ing.
I'm not talking about ko'ing. I'm talking about his reluctance to let his hands go. Marquez and judah are not "iron chinned" and I think everyone will agree that marquez posed no physical threat to Floyd that night. The only threat was the possibility of reinjuring his hands.
