I think too many people misunderstood Holyfield as he was never your typical loudmouth like Ali. Beneath the church boy's exterior, there was this confident beast who feared nobody. Forget his quiet disposition. The guy was a fierce warrior, make no mistake.

He couldn't wait to step into the ring against Tyson. Facing Tyson was already his goal back when others were trembling in fear just at the thought of Tyson. When he finally got the chance, he was already 34, diagnosed with a heart condition and Tyson was ripping through the HW division once again. None of this "pre-jail Tyon" and "prime Tyson" nonsense was around, on the contrary. People thought that post-jail Tyson was even more fierce, even more menacing and even more brutal than ever before. Tyson himself said similar things in interviews at the time.

Heck, people sent "get well" cards to Holyfield. I seem to recall there were a few morons who even sent funeral wreaths addressed to Holyfield's "widow". Did this affect Holyifeld? Sure - he only wanted to beat the breaks off Tyson even more.

You don't achieve much with trash talk against a guy like that.

Anyway, this fight has always intrigued me and I think it lends itself to many different possible outcomes. The most likely scenario to me, is Ali by wide UD over 15 rounds. It's interesting because there are only a few fighters I would say I'm a fan of. Holyfield is one of them and seeing that I think Ali is the HW GOAT, this is a real test to remain unbiased. But no matter how many times it plays out in my head, Ali wins.

What can Evander do, really? He's not going to out-box Ali, he's not going to KO him, he's not going to out-muscle him.....so what is his plan going in? Evander's hooks, particularly to the body, would be the only thing Ali would have to watch out for. And Muhammad has shown to be practically impossible to hurt to the body.

It would be a rare occasion to root for someone and that would be Holyfield.

 

Your forgetting that Holyfield never had competition that tried to actively play mind games with him. Ali on the other hand has a record that speaks for itself in being a guy who could trash talk like no other and back up his words in the ring. Given the track record Holyfield has when it comes to jokes/steroid allegations, you can bet Ali would've plenty of them prepared to use. There's a very good chance Holyfield would crack at some point given he has shown to be more temperamental than Ali.

 

Evander has always struck me as quite unflappable, seemed to possess a great deal of self control. I don't care what Ali would say to him - he wouldn't "crack".

Hell, we're talking about a guy that got a chunk of ear bitten off by the guy considered the baddest man on the planet and he wanted to resume and indeed did so, staying disciplined and continuing to whup that ass!

 

That is one of the most underrated moments in boxing history. Even though he was literally mutilated in the ring by his opponent, he didn't bite back, he didn't start to kick Tyson, he didn't attack him in a street fight manner. He didn't even do any of these things after Tyson bit him again. Most people forget that Tyson bit him twice, not "just" once. I've never seen such self-restraint before or ever since.

And people also forget that Tyson wanted to get out of that beating, that was the reason he did the biting in the first place. The "baddest man on the planet" was being battered for the second time in a row so he wanted no more part of the church boy and tried to get himself DQd.

There was no "beating" in the renatch, the fight barely begun and Tyson was DQ'ed

Holyfield NEVER had a heart condition otherwise he would have never been cleared to fight..............and the Mayo clinic never claimed he had a real heart condition, he just checked in, they figured out he had chest pain from excessive PED use, gave him better roids and he got out and fought the next opponent

 

Yep absolutely, Tyson bit him Twice and still Evander would've kept going, keeping his form & discipline.

In fact, thinking more about it, I wonder what other ATGs would stay cool & calm in the face of the Greatest's verbal onslaught? Probably a lot of them, Louis comes immediately to mind.

How much that would hurt-Evander was jumping up & down out of pain, more than even justified anger.
Then with that traumatic disadvantage, he just wanted to get back in there to knock him out, as he said.

I recall watching that fight with my then girlfriend at a friend's house-ironically @ a minutes walk from where I live now.
Though I was clever coming up with the problem being Tyson thought he was "The Real Meal"...
Then the broadcaster had the same observation! Who would know I first & independently invented it?

There is ZERO proof Holyfiled had a serious heart condition. it never went in front of the Boxing Commission and the Mayo clinic never released ANY confirmation.

He would have never ever been cleared to fight if he had serious heart troubles.

Holyfield himself claimed he was, wait for it, "healed" by a Faith Healer. Fact. Yes, you heard it here first, a FAITH Healer......thats some science right there ..............Faith can move Mountains but it can't beat a faster draw.

Let me throw you a bone here, I know this Boxing thing is something you are not good at so I help you out............in a scheduled 12 round fight the third round is considered "early" in the fight............

I don’t think Ali would get to Holyfield mentally Holy is pretty unflappable in fact I think he’d enjoy the circus and just laugh it off.
In the ring I think he’s one of the hardest match ups for Ali, he’s a good mover with good speed of hand and foot with great stamina and like Ali a great resolve.
Pre-exile Ali wins a fairly close UD for me post exile up to ‘75 I think Holyfield’s workrate and persistence can eke out a decision, the thing is Ali could find a way he often did.
