i have actually heard Keith Thurman say straight after Brook beat Porter that Kell was desperate to fight Thurman but Hearn swerved the top fights then chucked him in with GGG!! seems bizarre now.. Like you say ,poorly advised/badly managed/bad luck has seen his career gone unfulfilled which for me is the greatest shame because he was one of best British fighters for a generation imo
I think he will have an easy fight later this year maybe early 2018 at 154... then either try fight for a title at 154 or face khan at 147 then retire
Hearn was not swerving the fight it just made no money or sense at that point thurman wasnt a champion and he wasnt known
You have to admit, it took a lot of courage for Brook to fight Golovkin..........it destroyed his career, but he tried................against Spence he was doing well for the first half of the fight, just wonder if the weight drained him more than he realized, hate to see him retire..................time will tell...........perhaps he should try 154 before retiring................?
Lean isn't happening. Not way brook goes to 154 and then back down to 147. Khan happens at 154 or not at all.
the reason he ended up in with GGG is because his stock plummeted after Porter fight because he was fighting muppets and that was Hearns fault.add to that crazy injuries and he is gone so long nobody cares ,so bring on GGG ,raise his profile and start all over again!!but you cant just pick up where you left off 3 years ago...he was on top of the world after beating Porter and that was the time to be taking on Thurman ,Garcia,Peterson etc etc the money would have followed...3 years in wilderness then a fight v Spence looks a really bad decision now
In hindsight I bet Hearn wishes they had stumped up the cash for Vargas. It was well documented that Brook was fine making less than he was worth to make it happen. Shame Hearn didn't think the same. They would have been in with a great shout of fighting Pac if Brook beat Vargas, which I'm very sure he would have. All money would have been made back from that and then some. After reading just how strict Brook has to be with his nutrition and exercise to make 147, it will be a wonder if he does it all over again for Khan. If he does it will be a straight up cash out. As clean cut a cash out as you'll ever see. I won't be paying a penny towards it and I've always been a huge Brook fan. If he doesn't have any faith in his eyes holding up he should retire. If he has at least some faith in them, he should give 154 a proper go. He only turned 31 this month and has lived the life of an athlete, so it shouldn't be beyond him.
i was looking forward to Vargas fight ,i thought it would have been excellent stepping stone as would have that other tough kid he was going to fight,Diego Chaves i think?..there are many more that Kell could have fought to keep active and raise his profile ,Berto,Guerrero etc.. While these fights could have been made Hearn was looking at PPV 'numbers'!!i seem to remember him wanting Marquez at one point...Looking at the way Spence was progressed fighting fringe world class really showed as fight went on on Saturday..I really think Hearn has hindered rather than helped Brooks career the more i think about it,and for me its a massive shame we never seen the very best of Brook...:-(
Seem to remember him being linked with Brandon Rios as well. Another great fight. Yeah agree it's a shame we'll never see Brook live up to his potential. Pre-GGG Brook would have seen the 12th round bell again Spence if you ask me. I think the fight would have panned out very similar, but it all would have happened later. Brook would have had even more of the first 6 rounds and done better in 7th and 8th with Spence taking over afterwards. Maybe Spence would have done in round 10 or 11 what he did in round 7. But Brook would have held on and then it would have been tight on the cards. Of course Hearn needs to take a fair part of the blame, but I don't think he could have predicted Brook to end up such damaged goods just 2 fights later, even after fighting GGG. Don't want to make too many excuses for him but I think Hearn would do it all differently given the chance.
obviously hindsight is wonderful...but putting Kell in with the best 160lb and 147lb fighters after more or less 2 years lay off now looks stupid....the silly Frankie Gavin/JOJO Dan fights needed to be fringe title fights .... Thurman Rios Berto Chaves Vargas.....should all have been in with Brook but Hearn is all about 'BUILDING' the fight instead of building the fighter...the longer i have thought about this this week the more pissed off i am
Rios or Berto would have been decent fights - both former title holders - Rios probably past his best, Berto still a bit in the tank both winnable and decent money spinners maybe not on the level of GGG but Kell would have hardly been taking home magic beans. Vargas probably not the name but the WBO as a belt well it's something when it comes to getting the bigger fighters in the ring. Hell who knows he might have been able to get on Pac's fairwell tour. Cotto was muted at one point and he won't go on forever and he's not a huge 154lb er.. So many better fights out there for Kell than the one's taken. GGG and Canelo were both stupid fights for Khan and Brook today and both suffered devastating losses. Sure we don't know the ins and outs of getting a fight made but when big fights fail to happen time after time something is wrong. There's an interview with Dominic Ingle up today on Sky saying he expects Kell to fight on, the break is bigger than the GGG one but should be easier to operate on. Finishes with something like hope Kell gets it on with Khan next...
NOt sure that you coukd say hes lived the life of an athlete, he was known as a partier and doing the things they do at partys. Also he never held a proper weight between camps, was known to crash diet and eat rubbish. The rest of your post i do agree with tho
Surely regarding the orbital bones there's a weakness there? If the same eye had gone as in the GGG fight you could have said well it was weak because of the first injury, but for the other side to go? Surely there's something wrong there, he should retire for his own good.
