Yeah lived the life of an athlete was a bit of an exaggeration looking back. I have heard he was a bit of a lad when he was younger. I guess saying he has been training like an elite athlete these last few years is a better statement. And I don't think any of his lifestyle choices should have long term effects on his health. Before GGG and Spence you would have said he didn't have many miles on the clock for a boxer. At a more natural weight he should in theory have been very strong. What a difference two fights can make...
Completely agree. Slight defence for Hearn is that he was completely adamant before the Spence fight that Brook shouldn't go back down to 147, and that he only went along with it because that's what Brook and his team wanted. Probably a more experienced Hearn would have put his foot down a bit more. He seemed a bit too keen to please everybody as always. What a mess...
Heard a podcast with Johnnie Nelson today ....he said when he was working on fight and Khan said Kell should come back and have a fight then fight him next summer he wanted to just tell him to SHUT UP ,he has never wanted the fight!!!lol He also said he has spoken to Kell since fight and said to him if Khan comes calling again tell him to fight him at 154 or give him the bird .....basically gtf Khan ;-) So although i think Brook will retire perhaps he wont.?....money in the bank and 2 broken eye sockets will make it very hard to carry on imo.....Like Hagler said' it is hard to get out of bed at 6am for a run when you sleep in silk sheets'(with broken eyes)!!!
He will get his eye socket fixed and then set about getting fit and fighting on. No way does that lad quit. He'll have eye sockets like the Terminator when they've finished surgery. So many quality fighters win belts at more than one weight division & I feel Kell will be another. It's about levels and Kell is a world class fighter. He's got another 3-5 years and rivalries to build with other foes that he can talk about long after his career finishes.
Hope so but **** me if you think about it he's had a bad run Won world title got his leg half chopped off Fought p4p hardest hitter got his faced mangled Fought new up n comer and has his other side his face cracked. He's not had an easy few years.
To be honest , if you were looking at what Brook should do from a life point of view It would be worth taking another big money fight and taking a dive if his health was even slightly questionable
Kell is a top fighter but not elite, I've always said and I was proved right Kell's defence and especially on the ropes would be his downfall, For you to think he has 3-5 years left is just crazy, put yourself in kells shoes two broken eye sockets two defeats which imo could have been avoided, 1 he's no middle and simple fought for the big payday which I can understand. 2 no way should he returned at 147lbs,it was clear from round 6 the weight draining process was taking its toll. Kell fought a great fight against Spence but the faster more skilled and more natural welter win the fight
I was over in Fuerteventura last week and trained at the Ingle Gym there. Adam Bailey, who runs it, is a great guy with superb boxing knowledge. He maintains that Kell made the weight comfortably and looked strong in sparring leading up to the fight against John Ryder, Kris Cunningham, and Jamie Cox especially. I watched clips of Brook sparring Cox two weeks out from the fight and he looked very impressive, especially as Cox put it on him. That said, I agree he should be fighting at 154. Billy's right, it's the later rounds when the weight becomes an issue. Brook was going on 60 mile cycles during his training camp, which is obviously about the weight rather than sport specifically boxing conditioning. He fought very well for six rounds, and let's not forget that Spence is an elite welterweight. Kell will be looking for a mega fight against Khan next year, I suspect, and will cash out on that. And why not? He deserves to cash out now. I can't see him getting up for any other fight, maybe with the exception of Canelo. What people forget is that all the big names have avoided Kell for years. His lack of exposure in the States has been a factor in that, but also he's a handful for any welterweight. His victory over Shawn Porter in the US proved it.
If I was in his shoes no way would I consider it, I'd have quit if I'd broke my toe mate never mind eye sockets. Some of these fighters are mad though and they carry on. If he does then surely 154 is the only way to go and the most natural weight for him now?
Sorry but are people that dull that they didn't notice a direct drop in energy and his eye injury ? They happened simultaneously He didn't gas due to weight. He gassed as his eye fell out again and he was scared he would loose his sight You notice when he gets his composure back in the 10th he gives it a good go. Not the sign of gassed You could argue that the weight cut might have weakend his body and caused it. But he didn't physically gas
Kell was faster than errol I was there, It was clearly evident brook was the slightly faster fighter. I do agree though from round 6 onwards it was clear brook had gassed significantly and spence looked like an old school 15 round fighter. He looked like the 12 was easy for him to do. Brook will no doubt come back at 154, then either hope for a WBO title shot at 154(canelo will probably vacate and liam smith might pick it up) or face khan probably at 147 because no way will khan fight at 154. He will want to drag everything out of brook. Obviously depending on the outcome of those fights will determine how long he stays in boxing. I'd guess he has 3/4 more fights. Probably about 18 months/2 years left
I think one thing we failed to mention is the mental fatigue. Spence was a livewire and brook needed to mentally be sharp and then the worry of the eye also contributed to his fatigue overall. All trainers know mentally fatigue fighters will slow. This was what made ALI so good he had very good mental stamina/clarity when his body was slowing so his mind was always sharp. Oscar dear la Hoya was another who mentally just fatigues in his later fights I think this also contributed to the issue brook had.
I think in retrospect, going in with a guy that nearly everyone south of 12st avoided like a tramp on a bus obviously doesn't look like the most savvy move. However, retrospect also tells me that a boxer who takes an entire 10 years as a professional to fight a world level guy was never an elite level boxer. Taking that into account, he's dared to be great, come up short twice and made some tidy money in the process. He'll make a bunch more if he gets to fight Khan at some point too. Good luck to him I say.
