he was good at what he did, great chin, high volume, would just walk forward into anything to get to you, only knocked out once against mosley im actually impressed with his career given his ability actually
Well if youre already set to ignore his accomplishments and discard them with the 'he cheated' remark, whats the point of even making this thread? If you are going to dismiss the fact that he popped Sergios cherry, popped Cotto's cherry, gave a prime Williams a great battle, treated Cintron like a rag doll when popping his cherry (It took a bigger and younger Canelo the same amount of time to stop a shot and fireless Cintron 6 years later), beat Clottey (the same guy who thrashed Judah and brought Cotto to the brink) ect, ect, ect Theres no discussion to really be had when youre only accepting one side of the argument He was a huge, swarming pressure fighter with a very high workrate and a very good chin, and no average welterweight would beat him at his best.
He was OK, no where near a hof/atg status. You also HAVE to consider his cheating, its part of his career, it may of helped him along the way . It may not be just be a coincidence that he completely sucked after he was busted.
He beat Cotto, beat Sergio, beat Clottey, was one of the top 2 or 3 guys consistently during a very strong 2-3 year era. Fought Williams when nobody else would. Top fighter under rated by many today.
No proof he cheated against Cotto. Cotto was having a very hard time with him in the rematch until his fractured orbital suffered against Pacquiao came into play.
Margarito did very well for his skill level. Reminds me of Froch, for some reason. He made Floyd duck him, so he must have been decent...
Even a 'shot' Mosley (funny how he is considered shot when Margarito fights him, yet hes not considered shot for when Mayweather fought him the very next fight :huh) isn't an average welterweight. Most guys Margarito would face would not have the speed, power, experience or chin that a 'shot' Mosley had. And if you think Margarito was prime for that fight (at his best), you haven't followed his career and form very closely. That being said, regardless it was a horrible loss for him and helps shine a light on his limitations and his level as a fighter. But better believe, if he was as easy to beat as Mosley made it appear, he wouldn't have had half the success he had. I stand by my statement, no average welterweight beats him.
Congrats.... you've managed to poke holes in a champions resume. Something that is possible with... oh I don't know, every single fighter ever atsch
Sergio Martinez Kermit Cintron when he was highly regarded. Joshua Clottey Paul Williams- Razor close, draw would have been an appropriate conclusion. Cotto Not a bad resume at all. Had his career halted by Pacquiao's illegal handwraps which were caught by the HBO cameras.
