Can't really...it's amazing that Hopkins is still fighting and winning at all, but the dearth of recent talent has allowed the likes of Cloud and Shumenov to be beltholders and Murat to be challengers (I say that a little tomgue in cheek of course with a nod to Campillo, without whom none woulda got close to Hopkins). Ha - I'd not really put it together before but Hopkins last 3 fights have all been Campillos leftovers - coincidence?
It's a credit to Bhop. Technically, any champ he fights isn't a cherry pick but everyone knows what type of fighter he thrives against and which guys give him trouble. There is a reason why he jumped in the ring after Shum's last win and why he wasn't anxious to call out Stevenson or Kovalev. The latter two present much more serious challenges due to their varied skill levels.
Beibut Shumenov is a flat footed sucker for those unpredictable attacks Bernard sets up by reversing smoothly on short spaces and leading with big right hands above Beibut's low left guard or doubling up with short left hooks and out of his shell when he's leaning to his left. The problema here is that people can't make out where Murat could swing from a lower position and still Bernard could dodge and duck punches while slipping accurately punches of his own and Kovacs was standing still like a tower and presenting a wide target for long left hooks and that rigth hand that found Kovacs chin unprotected against the corner, arms down, essentially defenseless... Beibut's athleticism or Bernard's age will have nothing to do with it just like Jermain's athleticism didn't.
I hope you can now see the flaws I mentioned in Shumenov. It's all too easy to focus on what a fighter is doing right and ignore what he is doing wrong when they are winning.
Interesting we should look at what he has done in fights around this time for the last 10 years starting with the day of the Shumenov win. 1. APR 19th 2014 unifies the IBF & WBA LHW titles with a win over Shumenov 2. MAR 9th 2013 beat undefeated T Cloud to regain a LHW title and beat his own record of oldest world champion 3. APR 28th 2012 lost his LHW title to Dawson 4. MAY 21st 2011 beat Pascal to regain the LHW title becoming the oldest world champ ever 5. APR 3rd 2010 beat Jones Jnr who had beaten him when they first fought 6. APR 2009 had beaten undefeated Pavlik and yet to fight Ornelas 7. APR 19th 2008 and exactly 6 years before to the day when he unified the LHW titles, Hopkins was losing his LHW Ring title to a fighter coming up in weight to face him, in the undefeated Calzaghe 8. APR 2007 had beaten Tarver to win the LHW title and yet to fight Wright 9. APR 2006 had lost to undefeated Taylor in a bid to regain his MW titles in his last fight at MW, and yet to beat Tarver for his LHW titles 10. APR 2005 had beaten Eastman in an amazing 20th MW defence before losing his MW titles to undefeated J Taylor 11. APR 2004 Hopkins was between having beaten Joppy and soon to face R Allen for the 3rd time Well theres a run down of the last 10 years in short from me
Did you make a prediction on here before commenting ion others? Or did you wait till after to comment? Heres mine from this thread for you to enjoy :good
nice of you to applaud your own posts :good you do know you could make a HOF claim for carlos maussa by giving legitimacy to all those belts that are the cornerstone of your "facts", don't you even though you would prefer 2 belts per division (which is one too many anyway)
