I think that ppv is dead. Manny is still king of ppv

since Floyd is retired, but imo the fans have spoken. Do we really need ppv?

Four of the top fighters in the world failed to sell 200k discounting Pac. Ward, Kov, GG and Crawford can't sell ppvs. As fine a fighters as these guys are...they lack the "it" quality. Something is missing in all 4.

My question is what do you guys think is missing from these 4 guys? What do they lack? I don't care that they don't sell regardless but if they wanted to go the ppv route what's missing?

In the US, maybe. Here in the UK I imagine we're going to have many fruitful PPV's over the next few years. Lots of great domestic fights to be had, as well as internationals. The atmosphere is Lss Vegas and elsewhere seems a bit dull these days.

Well, Hearn is one the few promoters who get it. We still have old farts like Arum and Haymon who want to milk fans instead of putting on a good show consistently. The UFC is doing this better than anybody.

Well all you have to do is look at the PPV stars of the past and assess accordingly.

Tyson was just a straight up monster and the era of Ali-Frazier-Foreman-Norton was relatively fresh in everyone's minds (10 years earlier) - a young freak of nature beating big heavyweights. Then he became a scary dude after prison.

Oscar De La Hoya had the Hispanic crowd and the American crowd. A good looking guy who earned his stripes by beating so many very good fighters and facing Greats constantly - there were always massive matches.

Mayweather - earned notoriety when he became arguably the greatest 130lber of all time. After the Castillo experience, he decided it was time to make money so he picked his fights carefully and was a major trash talker which the sport had been missing since Hamed left. He got with 50 Cent and was a part of that scene, then he beat a past prime Oscar and gained a lot of publicity. Pacquiao came along and a debacle started. Mayweather was a huge star because of the prospect of the Pacquiao fight. After the Pac fight in 2015, his real name only drew 440k buys but that's still pretty good.

The thing is, the others are just getting started. Also, they need to be surrounded by many established Great names with a great following.

Agree in part. I just feel the UFC is the same guys fighting each other all the time. I'm not really into it that much, though. I can't put a finger on why but it will just never compare to boxing for me. In fact, I liked it more when it was all weights and fighting styles against each other. It's lost the novelty factor now.

Agree. The early UFC was too savage for this wussy run country. What can we do? The UFC just had their fist even in New York! That's because wussies run athletic commissions.

Isnt not that those top fighters are missing something, boxing as a whole needs a re-boost.
Leave the ppv model away for the next 3 4 years and just super 6 or super 8 the ish out of boxing in all of the major weight classes. The boxing governing bodies have to get together and discuss this.
Or Al Haymon has to put out his PBC belt and try to copy the UFC model. The 4 belts model is out dated. But boxers should also understantd that the landscape has changed, boxing is in a recession and in order to demand high purses risks have to be taken. Even if u take a loss that doesnt mean u cant come back stronger

Who wants to see a fixed fight? Kovalev beat the crap out of Ward and yet Ward's personal judges gave him the fight..............the referee should not have allowed the holding either.................Kovalev will knock Ward out in the rematch, which Ward does not want.............

You can still have PPV events if you promote it well, have good fights, and have a solid undercard. In the US boxing is going to be on the decline for quite some time and will lose out to MMA (just the UFC really) until something drastic happens. In the UK things are going pretty well, but at the same time people in the UK care less about the UFC lol.

Not really. When you have two PPV worthy fighters such as Golovkin and Brook you get 500,000 buys from a much smaller audience than the USA. When you have no fans unknown Ward wanting $5m then yes, it is screwed.

They don't really lack anything. Floyd/Manny was such a complete ripoff that nobody except the most hardcore of fans are willing to buy anymore and even we are starting to lose faith. They killed the golden goose. It will be years and maybe into decades before you'll be able to sell on that scale. What could shorten the bad period would be some Ward/Gatti, Barrera/Morales, Castillo/Corrales type fights in the upper tiers, but again, the Floyd paradigm is to systematically avoid such matchups, so such fights are less likely than they used to be. All of the up and coming boxers can blame their much lower market value going forward at the feet of those who made that swindle of an event.
