It sounds silly now as he is unified champion at 175, but Kovalev is actually one the smaller guys at 175 and he had a clear size/power advantage over Ward and I don't just mean punching power. If Kovalev could do that to Ward then I don't see why someone like Beterbiev couldn't the same thing, if not better. I just like Ward's chances against guys like DeGale over his chances over the top guys at 175 right now. What do you guys think?
He says he can't make 168 anymore, and I have no reason to doubt this. He boxed at LHW in the amateurs (178) and actually looked the bigger guy against Krusher. He's in his early 30s and his metabolism would be working against dropping back down too. His days at 168 are over.
He didn't really want to go to 175, but he had to. He was killing himself to make the weight and there's a point where your body says no more. If he tries he might actually lose beyond judges' repair due to dehydration. He can't go back. He either has to fight Kova again, retire or fight some pushover and get manhandled in court.
This. Ward just needs to fight good competition more often to stay sharp. He looked very stiff in the early rounds and it seems he needs 4-5 rounds to warm up. Once Ward warmed up and got comfortable it was an even fight. Kovalev screwed up bad by not capitalizing on that knockdown. Hopefully the rematch happens.
Ward is the best 175 pounder and has nothing worry about. He's cut from the same cloth as Mayweather and Pac and should continue climbing the weight class ladder as long his healthy.
****, when you put it like that it sounds impossible but can't he just try to slim down with dieting first instead of just doing a heavy weight cut in camp? There are guys in boxing that cut way more weight than he does so it can't be that difficult.
Ward doesn't look like he has 7 pounds of body fat/water retention available to lose at a glance, like guys like Tito Trinidad who were always a little squiggy around the edges, despite being a marathon runner.
Ward wants to win a heavyweight strap so the closer he can stay to that division the better. Kovalev did make Ward look small but I wouldn't call Kovalev a small 175lber, although he's no Anthony Yarde either
He's one of the smaller ones at the top. It's kind of funny; off the top of my head Kovalev and Stevenson are the smallest guys at an elite level of that division. This may just be me neglecting a lot of fighters though. It's Christmas so even though I'm posting about stuff a lot here I'm actually pretty distracted haha.
Kovalev has struggled to make 175 in the past and he's clearly the best guy Ward could face at 175. Ward shouldn't hurt himself by making 168 (and I understand it was a real struggle by the end) - he's going to get acclimated to light-heavyweight and, aside from the Kovalev rematch, he's going to face weaker opponents.
How may top SMW SPs body punchers did Ward beat???? DeGale Or fast, powerful big body punchers at that same weight??? Jack How bout slick CPrs who could land with big enough power to hurt someone like Froch or Abraham? Dre Dirrel Or iron chinned SP come forward body punchers with Cruiser size entering the ring???? Zurdo Cuz that's what he's up against down S. And then theres that incredible 5 tool fighter on his way N after he's acheived his goals at 160. NTM.... Ward doesnt disclose his fightnight weight, so we dont KNOW if he was truly the SMALLER man on the night. Their reach was bout the same....height very close, but Ward appeared bigger in the shoulders, bigger round the biceps, and forearms, and smaller in the head and legs, and unless Quazimoto gets reincarnated as a LHW fighter, everyone in the LHW division has smaller blades and upper back than Sergey.
