My last thread on the subject for the foreseeable future. Forgive me for starting another one, my only excuse is that I am relatively new to this forum, but I've had my say now and won't start another thread on this. It's taken me this long for the penny to drop, but the fundamental difference I seem to see between Hatton fans and Witter fans is that Hatton fans look at boxing as a popularity contest and Witter fans like to see the best fight each other. I understand the whole 'boxing is business' aspect, but still like to see the best fight each other. Maybe I'm naive. So we have Hatton - man of the people, TV appearances - having a piggy back of Harry Hill on TV Burp and cracking jokes with Al Murray on his show. Then Witter - can't sell tickets, moody, arrogant etc. So despite being #1 and #2 a fight between them doesn't happen because of their public personas. Am I right or wrong to say the whole argument is about the different ways Hatton fans and Witter fans view the sport?
It's wrong to generalise, some Hatton supporters are true fans of boxing and a credit to this forum.... Some Joe Calzaghe fans are morons who likely tore into him pre 2006... All comes down to the individual. Certain individuals are however as you described.
You're right. But that's the vibe I get of a large % of those who say Hatton has no reason to face Witter.
It's more accurate. As I've said before, if Witter was from Sheffield in Tasmania nobody would give a flying **** about this fight. And if Hatton didn't exist Witter would get a lot more heat about the quality of fighters that he's faced. I'm still 70/30 that the fight will take place.
Fat Joe, the thing you need to understand is that it isn't about the best matches being made even from the Witter perspective.... A lot of Hatton haters like to say 'Wita is 4rm engerland wich means dat dey shud fite cuz it wil be a masive fite in engerland' If we're making fights on nationality, then I'm sure Hatton fans can say they want fights made based on other factors.
Im a Hatton fan when he is fighting and a Witter fan when he is fighting. They are both British.I would stick up for Hatton if they met as its Lancashire against Yorkshire:fire .I would love to see the fight and think they should. But i wont be surprised if they dont meet and nor should anyone be.I just find it staggering that people get stuck into Hatton for saying this and not fighting him and selling out etc when every boxer on the planet does the same and would be the same if they made it to the American stage he has. From an entertainment point of view over the years Hatton has been great and hes fought 2 of the best fighters in the last decade. If he doesnt want to fight Witter so what.Hes paid his dues in boxing and got where he is through hard work and dedication and talent. He is now setting himself up for life and i dont begrudge him and neither should you.He will fight some more decent fighters and retire as a British great of his generation.
Its a hard one to work out I know mate.....this is the man that could not fill the 7000 seater Doncaster Dome.
Hatton had bigger fish to fry. Probably still has... just about. Unless he somehow gets Mayweather to fight him again or Mallinaggi (which is a more popular fight in the States), he can't continue to ignore Witter. With every Lazcano type fight he loses credibility with Witter screaming for the contest.
The best is Floyd Mayweather, Hatton fought him. Witter didn't. Hatton has faced everybody, Witter has faced nobody in comparison. Your new understanding lacks any sense. I couldn't give a f*ck if Hatton's on the Harry Hill show; he's fought Mayweather, Tszyu, Castillo... Think about it.
It's true, Hatton faced the best at 135 in Castillo, the best at 140 in Tszyu and the best at 147/P4P#1 in Mayweather. Hatton fights the best, Witter isn't the best.
Exactly Hatton's got all the popularity + connections. Witter is not likely to get the big fights if the likes of Hatton refuse to fight him. All the names you reeled off agreed to fight Hatton, they gave him a chance.
