I want to box but I have no gyms or trainers around here. I really want to do this but I just don't know what to do since there's no gyms around here for boxing. I'm considering buying a heavybag and just starting training myself and wait until I can find a gym. At the earliest it may have to wait until I go to Graduate school and go for my Master's Degree, I'll hopefully be in California, maybe in Los Angeles or Fullerton at that point. But since I live in rural Northwestern Tennessee I'm really unsure what to do. I could contact the local martial arts place and see if they'd train me because I'd be willing to pay for it. I'm 20 years old and am about to become a Senior in college this year, so I'm old enough to be responsible but I just don't have the experience. I regularly work out with weights, run and do cardio, so I'm at least in some form of shape. So what should I do?

well you can still register and have a registered coach in your corner he can be anybody...i mean you can train on your own , but its in your best interest to at least spar somebody and learn techniques. best advice i can tell you is watch a boxer that is close to your weight ..some one good ( marciano, tyson, frasier, ali, sugar ray, thomas herns , etc...)
and just do your best to learn and go at it

Cool, so I could be in amateur tournaments at the moment? I guess I'll start training on my own for a while and look for sparring opportunities. I am 5'9 and 170, so someone like Montell Griffin may be best for me to emulate. So what should I buy and also do for boxing training exercises? I huess I'll have to get one of my friends to hold mitts for me, but what else? I could do training at my college's fitness center, so what would be better a heavybag or a standing bag? A standing bag would be more convenient for me to carry to and from the fitness center unless I could take a heavybag set with me?

dont try and emulate anyone, find your natural style and watch alot of boxing any weight then you can imcorporate certain aspects of a fighters style in to yours but only if it adds to you

no point learning how to fight like sweet pea if your a slow brawler

Dont worry about being like anyone trust me your style will come to you. When I first started boxing I tried to be like everyone I though of but eventually just settled into myself. Although the amateur fights could really help you learn on the job at the moment id hold off until you can find some decent sparring because you will get crushed with no sparring experience. It would be good to have a buddy hold the mits but make sure he has proper form when you punch make sure he puts resistance on the pads or you will just throw your arms out and make sure he makes everything realistic like the pads closer to his face and not spread out real far and have him back up when your jabbing and correct him so he dont smother your range. Yeah get a heavy bag,buy some handwraps and a decent pair of 16 oz gloves its helps your conditioning and you will need them to spar with. Everyones different ive never been big on weights when I only boxed id run 5 miles every morning then finish up at the playground doing sets up dips, pullups, chinups, pushups on top the dip bars and then id work some abs although id did more ab work at the boxing gym with medicine balls. You can continue weight training just try to do it to be lean and still have flexiblity in your arms and some endurance. Do I lot of shadow boxing to work your technique you may be best suited now to watch alot of them instructionals im sure youtube or something has alot or I know title.com has some good books and DVDs. Good luck if you ever wanna ask me anything hit me up im on aim grapefruitballs9 or if you dont have aim PM me.

    1. buy a bag and hit it,
    2. set up a mirror so you can shadow box and see your form, where your hands are etc
    3. work in rounds of 3 minutes
    4. skip a lot for speed.
    5. learn simple combo's, jab double jab, hooks.

that's really as much as you can do without a coach, you need sparing and coaching to learn how to box.

I called the local gyms and no one answered and one phone was disconnected, so I'm out of luck for now concerning gyms.

Keep trying mate. You can't learn how to box without a trainer IMO.

I agree. If you can't find a trainer then forget fighting so keep looking.
