What's up everyone? I was just trying to get some information as to how to start boxing. I don't really know anyone that knows to much, so information as to where to start would be pretty helpful ha, i.e. gloves, what to look out for, etc. Also, I'm kind of a slender guy, I'm 5'10 or so, and weigh about 142lbs. I'm skinny, and my dad tells me I don't have the body for a boxer, but I really want to pursue it. Also I kind of have a bigger nose, and know to look out for the nose hits. Ha, I guess what I'm getting at is just a little advice. Thanks.
And how would that help? Like, not trying to be rude, but I wouldn't really walk around asking people around the gym what's what. Unless you're implying I get a coach?
That makes sense... But like, what kinda stuff do I need? Like what's some pretty standard boxing gloves, mouth piece, and should I get a punching bag yet. Ha.
just go in the gym with tennis shoes and workout clothes. gyms will provide what u need for a while. ur not that skinny. im 5' 10.5 and weight 130-135 when im not working out. if u stick with it u will find out what u need. wouldnt worry about most the **** just yet since you havent gotten any use for it.
before you go to the gym, start running and doing your basic pushups/situps/pullups. theyre gonna work you hard the first couple times to make sure you have the spirit for it so go prepared for a thorough workout and try to enjoy it. after a while once youre accepted its fun as hell and always a good workout.
just go to the gym and never be shy about asking people advice. when i started boxing i was like a dork asking anybody for advice. now i teach classes at the same gym. just make sure to be very humble and soak up as much advice as u can.
Don't listen to your father for one. Two, join a boxing gym. There's no need to get in shape first, no one expects you to join as a gym rat. That's what the gym is for, getting you in shape. Third, give it all you got :good
Ditto on the don't listen to your dad. I find even at 6'1" and 154 and giving age...I have a hard time finding fights, as most everyone is in a lighter category. And yes...just get your ass to the gym, and let it sort itself out. Too many people worry about being ready before joining. Ready is what a good gym will help you do. After you get a few months in a gym and get familiar, then get your medical to further train and to spar...well then I tend to think it is time to look at a more substantial fitness for boxing related workout. Too many people miss out IMO, for fear of not being ready. Ready begins with a walk thru the door.
right, no need to go turning yourself into a gym rat. but it does help being able to know the excercises proper motions before getting em tossed at you when you're already tired from training ya know? and the other side of that is that if you come in in fairly decent shape it'll cut the time it takes for a coach to be a coach instead of testing your guts.
Your dad is full of **** no offense I was the same exact weight and height when I first started boxing when I was 17 and I did alright. First off join a gym and dont worry you dont gotta follow guys around and ask stuff the coaches or fighter/coaches will notice your knee and help you out with the fundementals and good technique just try and learn whatever you can. More then likely they will have gloves there for you but if im you buy your own pair something in the 12-18 oz range also buy a pair of handwraps trust me its very important if you use them and wear them correctly your hands wont even feel like you box which believe me helps. A mouthpiece wont really be needed until you start sparring but its good to help with your breathing.
