This weekend and next two boxers a lot of people are expecting to be on futuer pound for pound lists have fights. Saul Alvarez faces Alfonso Gomez and Yurioriks Gamboa facesDaniel Ponce de Leon. Gamboa who fights this weekend and Alvarez who fights next weekend are both expected to come away with wins. I belive that for diffrent reasons Ponce de Leon and Gomez are pivital fights for Gamboa and Alvarez. Gamboa/Ponce de Leon. Gamboa a former Cuban amature star might be the best offensive boxer around. He's like watching a mini prime Roy Jones. There have been questions about his defense and his chin. Ponce de Leon might not be the most skilled boxer but he has been in with a lot of very good boxers and he can punch. Making him dangrus to Gamboa, in that he's an experanced vetran of 44 fights. Winning 41 times. I don't think this fight is going to last long, but with questions about the defense & punch taking abillity of Gamboa Ponce de Leon is a live under dog in my opinion. I also think that there are not going to be as many questions about Gamboa after the fight. Alvarez/Gomez. In the early stages of Kobe Bryant's NBA career I felt that he was overrated. Rather you like the Lakers or not, I don't (I chose my screne name because I'm a Trial Blazers fan). Bryant is one of the beat players if not the best player in the leauge right now. Why am I bringing this up? I'm not 100% sold on Alvarez. However experance tells me that I may be expecting too much out of a 21 year old kid. I am going to be honest with you. I think Gomez is going to win. He might not seem like it with a 23-4-2 record but Gomez is a step up for Alvarez. Gomez has been in bigger fights Gatti and Cotto than Alvarez has. I think his experance is going to pay off. Dose this mean that we should write Alvarez off? No it dose not. Like I said he's a 21 year old kid sure he has 38 pro fights to his crdit which is a career for a lot of very good boxers. Considering that he started at 16 an age where most boxers are still amatures. Alvarez is still dvloping as a boxer. A loss always hurts, but a loss for a 21 year old no matter how many fights they have had or even if they are already a champion is not remotely devestating. I think at his current rate of progresion Alvarez would beat this version of Gomez in a cupple of years. My pick is Gomez wins a close decision 7-5. I fell I have to say this again: "Do not write Alvarez off based on this result." He has a huge upside and this loss won't nescarly be forgoten, but it won't keep him from reaching his potional. To atempt to sum things up. Gamboa takes a big step in becoming a pound for pound mainstay, and Alvarez hits a slight bump in the road on his path to also being a pound for pound mainstay.
I agree about Gamboa vs Ponce de Leon but disagree about Alvarez. No way he is losing this one. Gomez is coming up in weight against a young boxer who's got good abilities and train hard in order to maximize them. Also Alvarez got the momentum and that's a huge factor in boxing. Let's see
