A very tricky one, and this is probably not what you're looking for... but just to get the ball rolling I'll say: Paulino Uzcudun.

    He was a contender.
He beat Harry Wills... a HOFer who fought some of the very best.
He outpointed Otto von Porat in a great Madison Square Garden Fight.
And he lost his last two fights against 2 HOFers, Max Schmeling and ATG puncher Joe Louis.

Thanks, hh. At least he fits the description - but he can't be the only one, so I would be surprised, if this is what Casey has in mind!

nope, but very good choice, the place is in fact MSG.My guy is smaller. Here's another hint.....the guy he lost to (by ko) in his very last fight is in ring magazine's top 25 punchers on their top 100 list.

yep,hh,it is Pete Mead,he fought joey dejohn at msg and won and it is considered by ring magazine as one of the greatest fights of the 20th century and is considered the bloodiest at MSG.He lost his last 2 fights to Randy Turpin and to the dynamite puncher Rocky Graziano. He beat Fritzie Zivic a hof'er who fought the best around.
