I was truly a great fighter who on retirement, co-starred in a famous war movie playing a hard bitten Sergeant. Who was I, and what famous movie ?

My first guess was Ingemar Johahnsson in ALL THE YOUNG MEN (1960). However he was still active in 1960 and was only a Privet in the movie.

None to all above. My guy was PERFECT for his role of a Sgt. One of the great war movies of all-time...

B,you of course.! Yesterday by happenstance I saw on TV "the Story of GI Joe".starring Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith. And in a supporting role.
Freddie Steele, who played a tough Sergeant so realistically, I was surprised how convincing was Steele. He was great and natural, befitting his place in boxing history,as one of the all-time top middleweights. Rent this great movie about Ernie Pyle...Cheers Bukkake :good
