I was a U.S. marines Boxing Champ, who turned pro, was very successful in my career, but died in the ring in my prime. I was ?
I'll go with Benny Cleveland as he won the Marine Corps Bantamweight title. The only other boxer I can think of is Laverne Roach, who also served in the Marines.
hh,you nailed me in the first round...It was Laverne Roach, who I saw in the Golden Gloves in Ridgewood Grove...Later on he became,a middleweight contender who had an 18 bout win streak...Foolishly they matched him with Marcel Cerdan, who I saw in 1946 MSG beating a tough Georgie Abrams...Close Fight...Anyways,Cerdan dropped Roach 7 times, stopping Laverne in the 8th round in 1948...In 1950 Roach fought an acquaintence of mine, Georgie Small, who stopped Roach in the 10th rd.Roach died in a hospital soon after the tko...We all felt awful..Laverne was a classy guy...b.b....
