I am considered the best college boxer of all time...I was so dominate, that I was eliminated from competing in any college tournements... Who am I ?
correct, it was Billy Soose...A great college boxing champ who became middleweight champion of the world...Soose was a great boxer, who I believe would have held his own with the Haglers, Monzon etc...
Yes, Boxing Historian Tom Donelson wrote (Boxing Insider, 11/01/2004) "As an amateur and collegiate fighter, Soose's forte was power. As a college fighter, he was so good that NCAA outlawed golden glove champions from competing and this legislature was directed at Soose. Soose knocked out every collegiate fighter he competed against and many college teams refuse to compete against him."
It would be great if the NCAA would bring back boxing, or if some colleges made it a club sport. High Schools too. I rember reading a CIF (Calliforina highschool sports) rulebook. It stated that any school with a boxing program would not be allowed to particapate in any sports. Kind of harsh in my opinion.
Years ago i saw an old HS yearbook of my grandfather this was in the late 20s early 30s in New Mexico and they had a boxing team at his high school.
