I was challenged to do this so I have: My Castillo-Mayweather I Scorecard

A couple of weeks ago I was challenged by a fellow poster to put up my Castillo v Mayweather 1 scorecard, because I said I had scored it for JLC but hadn't seen the fight in a long time. The poster in question said that if I watched it again now and scored it fairly I would have a Mayweather win, as this was the clear result, so I agreed to do so. I watched the fight with an open mind, and watched some close rounds twice. My mate had my Mayweather set so I was unable to post this when the challenge was issued, but I got it back today so here is my scorecard at last...

    ROUND ONE: Mayweather 10-9

    ROUND TWO: Mayweather 10-9

    ROUND THREE: Castillo 10-9

    ROUND FOUR: 10-10

    ROUND FIVE: Mayweather 10-9

    ROUND SIX: Castillo 10-9

    ROUND SEVEN: Castillo 10-9

ROUND EIGHT: Mayweather 10-9 (would have been 10-10 but Castillo had point deducted)

    ROUND NINE: 10-9 Castillo

ROUND TEN: 10-8 Castillo (Mayweather deducted one point)

    ROUND ELEVEN: 10-9 Mayweather

    ROUND TWELVE: 10-9 Castillo

    TOTAL: 115-113 Castillo

Harold Lederman had it 115-111 Castillo, but for me that's a little wide. Although I think Floyd should perhaps have been docked a point for hitting after the bell at the end of the 9th. However, the ref didn't so fair enough.

Close fight, very very entertaining fight, and some great moments from both fighters. I especially liked Floyd's versatility when he fought in the pocket in the 11th. Lederman gave that round to JLC, but I liked Floyd's speed and accuracy up close.

Ultimately though, I just think Castillo outworked and outlanded Floyd for the bulk of the last two-thirds of the fight. He seemed to dictate the fight, he landed some great bodyshots and even a couple of good clean headshots when Floyd was on the ropes, and although Floyd scored cleanly on the backfoot, he never looked dominant or even very comfortable at any stage.

Although it was a close fight, I'd rank the judges' decision as an absolute stinker. A wide UD for Floyd is a joke.

The abuse will flow without doubt, but I can say with a clear conscience I scored the fight fairly and objectively - and I thoroughly enjoyed the bout (especially Larry Merchant's glorious outburst in round 9 at the ref for telling the fighters to calm down!!)

    JMHO :bbb

I challenge you to watch Sultan Ibragamov/Wlad Klitschko on a 4 hour loop.

And I have the same card too btw...although I have NO problem admitting that I was probably looking for rounds to give Castillo. Still a close decision to either guy is fair.

I never scored it rd by rd but a draw seemed fair to me, very close fight, there was certainly no robbery no matter who got the verdict.

    115-112 Mayweather

The biggest factors were the point deduction rounds which I gave both to Floyd.

i had it close but for castillo

floyds most difficult fight by far but it proved he can fight in the booth if he wants as he again proved against hatton

Certainly no robbery, the fight was far too close for that, but the scorecards were a scandal. One of the worst decisions of the decade IMO, because strangely all three were in agreement and all three were well off.

Agreed. As I said, I liked Floyd in the 11th. That's one of the things I like about peak PBF, his versatility. His jab wasn't brilliant, but it was good, and he could jab, move and box brilliantly. As he showed in the 11th, he could fight in the pocket on equal terms with a strong, accomplished pressure fighter. Pernell Whitaker was a boxer who could infight with the best of them (see McGirt I), as was Ray Leonard (see Duran I). Floyd wasn't on the same level as these guys IMO, but he did have a similar versatility at his peak. Great fighter.

Lederman and Larry Merchant did too. Although I thought it was a close fight, I can't work out how someone could have Floyd winning. A draw maybe, at a push. But I watched it very closely and judged very objectively, over the course Castillo definitely deserved it IMO. Of the 'close but clear' variety, as I had it by 2 points and I can't work out which rounds I could change to justify a 3 point swing the other way.

I myself cant give the 3rd to Castillo. I gave round 4 to Floyd as well.

I had a Mayweather win, and thats how.

Good objective scoring is rare, btw. Giving it the old college try is admirable, and you certainly came to the only conclusion that can be deemed correct: It was a close fight, and the scorecards will vary.

I don't understand how the 3rd could be scored for Floyd, but fair enough mate, close fight that will always divide opinion. We all have our own interpretations.

You give out even rounds, which is something I try not to do when I score a fight. It makes things too complicated, IMO. Give those even rounds to somebody, in this case Floyd, then a case could be made for him winning this fight.

    Anyway, my score card:

    Castillo/Mayweather

    Round 1: 9-10
    Round 2: 9-10
    Round 3: 9-10
    Round 4: 9-10
    Round 5: 10-9
    Round 6: 10-9
    Round 7: 10-9
    Round 8: 9-9
    Round 9: 9-10
    Round 10: 9-9
    Round 11: 10-9
    Round 12: 10-9

    113-113: Draw

Arbitrarily awarding a round to someone when you think there was no clear winner is not legitimate. Real judges do not purposefully try to avoid an even round. For me, there is absolutely not one shred of logic in that.
