While impressed with JCC Jr, I always knew he had this if he just trained.

That said, he only fought a limited fighter with poor defense. OF COURSE you will look good if you're technically better skilled than the other guy.

  2. Really? I thought he showed very good handspeed for a middleweight and put some nice combinations together.

It's hard not to be impressed - within reason.

Knee-jerk posts like "Chavez knocks out Cotto" exemplify not staying within reason.

He got dragged into the trenches, and climbed out of them - and shot into them like an 80's Arnold Schwarzenegger character. His preparation and his heart were things that were questioned previously, and he answered the questions well on his biggest stage.

Of course, it needs to be kept in perspective that this WAS Duddy - and hitting him with more than fifty percent of your power shots doesn't exactly denote a towering achievement of technical punching mastery.

Everybody always used to say the one thing he had going for him was the left hook to the body - he still has it, but if anything I'd say it's taken a backseat to his right hand. That is a real weapon, and if the kid stays focused like this he might even win a belt, which never crossed my mind as a possibility before in his lackluster days. He'll never unify or beat anyone elite, since his technical progress is just too little too late at this point in his career, but he at least now has the weapons to comfortably dominate the types he's supposed to and go after a weak paper champion in his choice of weight class.

I thought he was a southy fighting orthodox like ODH. But he damn for sure developed into a puncher. I remember seeing him not put too much a dent into any live body. But you heard skulls crackling in that fight. It was not the fact that it was Duddy. Those were some thudding shots..lol All of them. I mean seriously.. all power shots.

What? Roach does pretty selectively align himself with aggressive, offensive fighters for the most part.

His technical progress it too little too late????:huh

The kid is still in his early 20's and you're talking as if he were in his 30's and fighting for ages....:patsch

Jr. has showed promise before he hooked up with Roach, his problem in fights has been stamina and lack there of........

Who's to say if he can reach a level to fight elite fighters, but I certainly would'nt count him out if he dedicates himself to the craft as Freddie Roach has claimed Jr. has been doing since he's been in his gym.

Tonight I saw good fundamentals...I saw efficient body work in addition to an educated jab which often had his opponents head snapping upwards, his eyes rolling and looking up at the skies. A little thin on head movement, and I think it's fair to say Chavez Jr doesn't possess great power, but he's a good, talented fighter in his own right...and he should be proud of his effort against John Duddy.

    - Two handed fighter
    - Good variety of punches at his disposal
    - Combination's to head and body
    - Good work rate for 12 rounds indicates improved stamina
    - Okay handspeed

    - Lack of head movement
    - Not much in terms of Punching power but a lot of snap

He impressed.I like how he get's angles to the right and that right bomb.Duddy seemed open to that shot all night long.Duddy for some reason cannot get away from that shot? They were working on it and it worked beautiful.Nice combinations, left hook to the ribs and mixes it up with a flurry to the head finished with a left hook to the body and back up top.But very very good.

Ring age, man. He's boxed one more round (and twelve more fights) than Duddy despite being seven years younger and pro for the same duration of time (both since '03).

Most trainers will tell you that guys get stuck in bad habits just transitioning from the amateurs to the pros. After FORTY pro fights with his old shitty style you expect him to shed all his bad habits? He didn't emerge from the pupa a brand new critter against Duddy. He showed flashes of potential, but it will still be an uphill climb trying to undo all of the shitty instincts he's spent the last eight years programming himself with. This was John Duddy he looked technically brilliant against - as much as we all wanted to root for Duddy and believe he could win, he's right there to be hit and we all know it. Let's not get ahead of ourselves - Chavez has a ways to go, and early twenties or not, he's been doing the wrong things for too long to think it will be a quick and easy transformation.

At what weight would he fight Pavlik?

Chavez at 168 is a sick joke, and Pavlik has disavowed himself of the middleweight scene.

at 160 or 68 Pavilk gets him out before 5. I think, Green, Taylor, or Miranda starch him early. At 160.

Who the hell is saying Chavez will be fighting elites tommorow??

Arum mentioned Cotto for the future, not for tommorow.

The only bad habit I've seen that could be a problem for Chavez is that in the past he's failed to take advantage of his height and reach and fight off the jab.
Chavez has elected to fight like his dad, but the problem is that he does'nt have the body type to make tha style work for him.

Bottom line is that Chavez Jr. has hooked up with a capable trainer now who will work to have him on working on good habits.
.....Chavez is a young enough fighter that any bad habits he's picked up can be rid of.

Duddy is'nt all world, but he certainly was a step up in competition for Jr. and he passed that test with flying colors.

Imo Duddy would have beaten the Chavez of just a year ago who was gassing after 5 rounds.......which btw is where fighters pick up bad habits, making do with fighting while they're gassed.

With better conditioning and stamina will come improved habits.:deal:bbb:bbb:bbb
