...Actually, I was just his right hand, period. For years, I haven't gotten the credit I really deserved. I toiled away in the shadows, so unappreciated was I that most couldn't be bothered to even admit to my existence, let alone my significance. I parried away all kinds of serious funky stuff...I hooked to the body and busted ribs up...I sent jolting uppercuts to the head. I was on offense, I was on defense. I always worked HARD but I didn't get credit like flashy old Lefty. :-( Once I recall soaring upwards in an uppercutting motion, through the air 60 MPH up at Manuel Ramos' head and snapping it back and thinking 'SEE ME, WORLD! This is my time to shine! Know me! Love me! Acknowledge my greatness!'... but it never happened.

I suffered depression, cramps, varicose veins...My knuckles sagged and sometimes they shrunk and sometimes they swelled up. Every time I saw myself in the mirror, I looked over at Lefty(aka Biff) and thought 'I should cut that dirty attention-whoring scamboogah off while Joe's asleep! :fire' but then I realized I'd never get my dues that way. It would probably stop us from fighting at all. For a brief flicker in time, I was given hope for having recognition. See, in our biggest moment of glory, I crashed into Muhammad's face and "The Greatest" (Jive Turkey of them all) said I didn't event exist right to my knuckles! He dissed me in my most poignant experience since Joe hit puberty! (Long story)

So I flew into him again! BANG! ''I exist, Muhammad! I exist, you dirty scamboogah! I exist, world!"...I tried to shout, mouthless fist that I was. Nobody paid much attention though. I became a recycled punchline in Bert Sugar's routines, portrayed as a two-hit wonder because that Dempsey fanboy couldn't give me my respect for the duration of a whole career anymore than Muhammad would...or the world.

Today, Joe loses fantasy match-ups based solely on being "one-handed"...and I weep...Like I did anything wrong! Like I wasn't doing MY job! Because I know they mean "left-handed" when they say "one-handed". Could they ever see? Could they ever understand?

...I am Joe Frazier's right hand. A lover, a fighter, a person. And I am as I was then...relevant. Thank you all for your time. Be kind to each other. And be kind to all the non-dominant punching hands. ...Many of us do deserve it. We may not be flashy, but we have substance.

Please take a moment to see my photo gallery, with some of my treasured memories:

Me parrying a Muhammad left, which nobody ever mentions. My parrying alone could've beaten Muhammad 3 times! Anybody who says otherwise is a jive turkey, friends. Also, I had a bloody hangnail that day. I didn't say nothing.

This is me on Don King's left shoulder, Tex. I didn't want to get too close to Muhammad's left (Boris was his name), because then I would NOT be responsible for my actions! :bbb

Me shaking Ray Emery's hand, Ted. Good people.

That's me at the Cabo Wabo Cantina in Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on Monday night, January 18. Everyone got lucky but I got three times the action Joe or Lefty got. Somebody in this picture was yelling "No right hand, my ass!" ALLLL night!

    "No right hand may ass"
    or
    NO, right hand, MY ASS"

Good thread, my man. I've always given you (Frazier's unnoticed right hand) a lot of credit. One handed fighter my arse. Frazier's right hand to the body was dynamite.

I got a good laugh from this and I'm in complete agreement. That right hand never does get any mention (except here, of course), but when I see Frazier land a right uppercut or right to the body, I think, how can people say he's "one-handed"?

I will note that Frazier trusted his left hook the most and it seemed he didn't fire the right with as much conviction.

Ripping open Jerry Quarry's face at 2:37 with a quick shove and
snort. (In 1980, Cooney did likewise to Young with a very similar
    long right.)

Overdue, funny tribute to Joe's powerful right.

But, at the highest levels, Smoke must be penalized for relying too much on his left hook and not developing his right as an offensive weapon beyond inside fighting.

    a) Ali was in very bad shape after getting nailed with a double left hook on the ropes in Round 11 of FOTC. Yet he was able to survive relatively easily by simply stumbling back and away from Frazier's predictable, repetitive lunging with the left hook.

    b) When a shockingly overwhelming George Foreman was destroying Joe and taking his title, the great Smokin' Joe's offensive response was limited to huge, telegraphed, --and thus useless-- left hooks that even George Foreman could see --and avoid-- a mile away.

How was Joe supposed to do anything else? George was pushing him away every time Joe was in range. In the first round alone, George pushed Joe off of him with both arms 15+ times without a warning.

Frazier really started developing and working on his right hand at this point. It was massively improved at this point. I feel this might be a better performance than the first Quarry fight for this reason.

You were indeed an unsung hero. You had a pretty good night in Joe's second bout with Jerry Quarry in 1974.
