I knew Allie Stolz very well too and your right, Tippy was a little better. I remember I was at the fights and they were honoring Allie and they just said a few words about him and hardly anyone knew about him. The someone told the promoter that I was in the house and they asked me to do the honors. The place went wild as I gave Allie his just do, and Allie was so happy. After he was asked for more autographs then you could image.

I did not see the Tippy Larkin/Billy Graham fight MSG in 1947 ,but friends who were there told me Graham was outclassed and didn't win one round..Such was the skills of Tippy Larkin...Tall.classical boxer, and very sharp two handed puncher...But his chin was his achillies heel...B.B.

Yes, people told me the same thing. The judges did give Billy a round or 2. Tippy was rated in the top 10 from October 1938 to January 1950, for a total of 69 months. He was rated #1Lightweight and was the Jr. Welterweight Champion in 1946. Allie was rated in the top 10 from February 1939 to February 1947 for a total of 37 months. He was rated #1 Lightweight at one time. Tippy stopped Allie in 3 rounds in 1944.

I saw Allie Stolz a few times..But the one fight that I saw Stolz in I will NEVER forget...
Jan.29.1943 at MSG, my father and I watched the 135 pound lightweight Allie Stolz against the young [pre plane crash] Willie Pep non-title fight...I a big fan of the clever, sharp punching Stolz picked him to be too big for 126 pound Willie...Well were we in for a rude surprise.Pep won EVERY round of the 10 round fight, even dropping Stolz to boot...THAT Willie Pep would have certainly licked Sandy Saddler, of that I'm certain...But Allie Stolz was a very classy lightweight for sure...

Burt, your recollections really are amazing. How do you see Larkin doing against Alexis Arguello, Arguello could be out boxed but he had that punch?

A great matchup-I think that Arguello was a bit smaller than Tippy Larkin.Arguello prime 126-130 pounds...While Tippy Larkin was 135-140 at his best...Tippy Larkin was a faster mover,on his feet, while Arguello, one of my alltime favorites, was more stationary, like a small Joe Louis...
I think that at even weights Arguello has to ko Larkin to win,or he loses a decision...I might add that Tippy Larkin faced much tougher opposition than Arguello...Tippy fought in the second "golden age",in the early 1949s.. The fight would to me be a tossup, even weights...

How is Michael doing? I know Frazier isn't doing nearly as good as Douglas and Holmes at the moment.

Larkin was knocked out by just about every excellent fighter with a big punch that he ever faced, so if I'm a betting man, I'm going for an Arguello KO. As we saw against the likes of Pryor, Rooney, Costello and co, Arguello could still bomb at the higher weights.

Kudos to Jack kid Berg who did beat him in points. Anyone know anything about the fight?
Larkin was giving away a few pounds.

I only know that Tippy Larkin was twenty two years old in 1939, when Jackie Kid Berg decisioned Larkin...One of the very FEW times Tippy lost by dec. Kid Berg by all accounts was a swarmer who threw so many punches, and gave you no rest...I would have loved to see Jackie Kid Berg against Beau Jack, who was my favorite swarmer...What a battle that would have been,oh my:

Michael is doing very well. Like you said, Frazier is not. He walked with a cane.

I would agree, just Larkin was a real good boxer and mover and definitly could trouble Arguello. I do expect him to take out Larkin in the mid-late rounds
