and so many memories ran through my mind watching Sugar Leonard. Leonard was a beast, and his comp was tough from day one.

Leonard was not a completely skilled fighter coming out of the Olympics. He had a lot of talent, but he had not learned when to box, and when to slug yet. Leonard slowly honed his skills under Dundee, and became a complete two fisted beast. Leonard was tagged early too which showed that he had a chin.

Watching him in his younger days, ironically Sugar was a slugger who could box at that time. Leonards skills were not finished yet, but he was close. He fought so many different styled fighters, some with over 40 fights which molded him into the man he would become. Leonard was a strong welterweight. Beating Duran finally made Leonard a complete fighter.

Watching Sugar fight Gonzalez, Marcos Geraldo, Edwin Viruet, Willie Rodriguez, Ranzany, and then Benitez was a treasure to watch!

    Sugar was a true G.

Probably should've put this in the classic forum.

  4. I´m reading the Four Kings. You won´t get an era like that again in boxing, and Leonard was part of it. He beat them all.

leonards the best fighter of my lifetime, absolute poetry to watch, flashy with great technique but with the balls to dig deep in adversity. just reading his auto biography at the minute but still to this day got loads of his big fights from the olden day on video tape from when they actually happenned.

Sugar Ray Leonard was a truly amazing fighter. An iron chinned warrior, who overcame adversity to win his biggest fights. The period of his career where he recorded wins over an undefeated Benitez, Duran, Kalule and undefeated Hearns is up there with the very best. The win over Hagler cemented his greatness, it's the best comeback ever in the history of boxing.

  7. Have you read Four Kings HEAD'? It's a ripsnorter of a read. :deal

Leonard got.tagged early in career. He was a tough, ruthless dude. We remember the big fights, but before then Dundee told him, like Ali, no softies.

Ray ran through a number of rated Welterweights en route to his first title shot. Taking into consideration his ability and skills, best wins at the weight and quality of resume in general, I wouldn't have any problem with somebody rating him the #2 147 fighter of all-time, to be honest.

    09/78: Floyd Mayweather W-TKO10 (147)
    10/78: Randy Shields W-UD10 (147)
    01/79: Johnny Gant W-TKO8 (147)
    06/79: Tony Chiaverini W-RTD4 (154)
    08/79: Pete Ranzany W-TKO4 (147)
    09/79: Andy Price W-KO1 (147)
11/79: Wilfred Benitez W-TKO15 (147) [Wins WW Title]
03/80: Dave Green W-KO4 (147) [Retains WW Title]
06/80: Roberto Duran L-UD15 (147) [Loses WW Title]
11/80: Roberto Duran W-TKO8 (147) [Wins WW Title]
06/81: Ayub Kalule W-TKO9 (154) [Wins LMW Title]

Ray was definitely the man, though the molestation thing is somewhat questionable.

W-L ratios have seemingly taken on a grander meaning for today's boxing crowd and it's a little unfortunate to be of that generation in terms of when I was born, but it's really very easy to see why many of them, while attempting to diminish former greats, have a certain level of respect for SRL in general. Take these guys' records for instance at the time Leonard defeated them:

    Benitez (38-0)
    Duran (72-1)
    Hearns (32-0)
    Kalule (36-0)
    Hagler (62-2)

Leonard has the most significant win over all of them that anybody ever had. Four slam dunk HOFers and a fifth Lineal Champ in a higher weight class than Leonard was campaigning in at the time.

    Kids love him.
