What is the referee doing in that first round? Trying to protect Nigel Benn

Yes with out question Benn should have been counted out ..Reminds me of the ref in the Bute Andrade 1 fight.

He not only protected him, he let Benn rabbit punch the entire fight which caused McClellans condition.

I don't know about Benn being counted out, but the rabbit punching was about as dirty as I've ever seen in the sport. It's not Benn's fault. The ref allowed this to go on for the entire fight and a fighter does what he is allowed.

McClellan was ATG material, amazing punching power.

Gerald was trying to jump on him and the ref kept getting in front of him and slowing him up. Gman wasn't really paying him much attention.

As they say it is a 12 round fight,Benn started coming on strong and dismantled the yankee scumbag.

Right but that was with the assist of the ref! He was out of there in the 1 st rd..I thought it was a 1-1 not a 2-1 fight.

I think the ref was a bit panicked. That first round was wild. If I remember right, G-Man hadn't gone all the way to the neutral corner and the ref was indecisive about either sending him all the way back or letting it go and balked when he called time in. I think Benn also took at least one bomb to the back of his head when he was sitting against the ropes, ie the Ref probably should have already called a KD and started counting.
Benn was definitely up after the first KD, some have claimed he was saved by ring side media pushing him back to his feet but that's not really what happened. His legs and arms were tangled up in the ropes and they put their hands to stop him from falling arse-first out of the ring. As he got back into the ring he ducked under the 1st rope, not the middle one. If he had been too groggy to stand up on his own he would have lost his balance ducking under that bottom rope.

I forget the documentary but Benn's own team knew they got lucky in the 1st rd .

You get 20 seconds if you're punched through the ropes... So no he shouldn't have been counted out.

Yeah he had absolutely nothing to do with the countless right hands McClellan was eating flush in the mush all night.

I just watched it again and the ref did a poor job in that first round overall and it did favour Benn. He ducked his head underneath waist level more than once. I heard the commentator say that the Ref's count was lenient, implying he got a long count but I'm pretty sure if you go through the ropes you're supposed to get a little longer than 10, either 15 or 20 (?). By the end of the round Benn had gotten GM's attention, it seemed every punch Benn landed backed GM up and by the end of the 2nd round to my mind he looked to be on top.
The first round was definitely wild and sloppy but I don't think it's fair to say GM was robbed.

So the rabbit punching was worse than Bowe and Golota playing pinball with each others balls? It was dirtier than Tyson biting Holyfield's ear off?

    Get ****ing real you bellend...haha

See rabbit punching all the time, it was nowhere near as bad as you're making out.
