Rabbit punching is possibly the most dangerous foul. Referees should be more strict about it. Marcos Maidana-Victor Ortiz was a fight in recent years that had a lot of bad rabbit punching.

Gerald McClellan was said to have been complaining about headaches ever since the first Julian Jackson fight. That could have meant a lot or meant nothing. Lots of people get headaches and they aren't brain-damaged.

I wonder if McClellan's tendency to cut ridiculous amounts of weight took a toll on his body and played a part in this.

He was a vicious puncher, but I don't see him being an ATG if his career went on. Big punchers have a lot more to them than just power, and McClellan seemed to be regressing technically. Too power-crazed and open defensively.

Weight draining does shorten your longevity from a brain health standpoint- the fluid surrounding your brain is diminished along with everything else, and there isn't enough time to replenish it from weigh-in to fight time.

This affects both the ability of the brain to absorb impact, and negatively affects mental performance as the brain is starved for nutrients. I know it's an overgeneralization to paint everyone in that light, but there is a negative correlation there between fighters who drain massively and fighters who are technically gifted and carry the highest ring IQ.

That's a big reason I hate the massive weight draining game. Fighters gain a short term "benefit" (if one looks only at the size advantage), but that gain is paid back with interest once all the costs are taken into account.

We are proud to be called Yanks by a clown like you. We've been beating and knocking out your heroes for maybe if not more than a century, and when we haven't or didn't...you probably never fought our Yanks in their prime. You can probably count on both hands*2 how many great, atg and legends the British have let alone fighters in Europe.

How does a boxer clearly beating the count mean without question he should have been counted out.

Benn was a hard puncher, and he was rabbit punching for the entire fight. He did what he was allowed to do. Wasn't the ref banned for life or did he retire?

You only get 20 seconds if you fall of the ring apron IIRC.

Gman was a jackass. I don't care that he lost, but if he could have got him out of there he didn't have to put himself at risk.

I've read a lot about this fight as well as watching it. The count may have been long but he got up and didn't get knocked down again. There was the hint of a headbutt that caused Gmans condition. However he was eating big shots from round 2 onwards. When I say big shots, you have to remember that Benn was considered one ofthe biggest punchers in the division if not p4p.

The injury seems like the result of a large accumulation of punches, including Geralds previous fights with Jackson etc. I'd guess that he was hit with a big shot early that broke something. He fought through instinct but he was losing a fight he should have been winning. The accumulated punches finished the initial damage and that was that.

No rabbit punch caused that damage.

He's doing what referees in England do best for local fighters in the most shameless fashion ever. Noticed how many rabbit punches Benn was freely landing without any warnings?
