"I will quit boxing in five years" - Amir Khan


Amir Khan says he will quit boxing in five years time, at the age of 28.
The Bolton native is the current WBA light-welterweight champion and will defend his crown against hard-hitting Argentine Marcos Maidana in December.



He told BBC Radio Manchester's In the Spotlight: "By the time I'm 28 that's the time for me to hang my gloves up and stay with my family.
"I'm going to walk out of this sport the way I walked in and that's what I want to tell other people who box."



He added: "You don't want to walk out of the sport brain dead."



Khan burst into the boxing world at the 2004 Athens Olympics where he won a silver medal and turned pro shortly after.



However, Khan's future in the sport was questioned when he was knocked out in 54 seconds by unheralded Colombian Breidis Prescott in September 2008.



But 10 months later Khan bounced back, outclassing and outpointing Andreas Kotelnik to claim the WBA light-welterweight crown at the MEN Arena in Manchester.



Since then he has made two defences against Dmitriy Salita and Paulie Malignaggi and his next defence against Maidana will take place on 11 December at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas

He might not even have five years of boxing career left if he looses to Maidana, Its back to the drawing board. Also sounds like he wants to do a Naseem Hamed, Fight win a few world titles and then retire and keep talking about a come back and never do it.

Im glad Khan lost early in his career otherwise he would have ended up with 30-0 a few world titles, Got KO'd and then retired like Hamed.

 

Good on him if he does. Make his money then get to **** out the ring.
Hope he would stay in the sport though, pass on some of his knowledge to other boys wanting to take up boxing.

 

You mean become a journeyman?

I dont see him doing a Bernard Hopkins or Nate Campbell, Nor do I see him going down to Euro or domestic level fighting on undercards because of his pride.

 

Yeah I get what you mean, But the guy has never really had a life, He has been boxing since 8, So if he retires at 28 then he will have been doing boxing for like 1/5 of a century. It adds up and the mileage on the clock doesnt go down.

I think about 30 is reasonable, But it all depends, For Khan retiring at 30 is good but then again you have boxers like McCloskey who are 33 and still not won a world title so he will retire early because he started so early.

 

A bit like what Hatton is doing just now with his gym and promotions stuff. I think Khan could be a hugh star and would like to see him pass on his trade to others. So if you have the business head why not use it.

 

Yeah Khan has his own gym in bolton, Think he spent like a £1 mil on it, so its a big gym, As for promoting he does have Khan promotions, But I dont see him doing an Oscar DLH and going into promoting fighters. Just dont think he has the personality and the charisma do it.

That being said when you said "Pass on his trade" I thought you meant him becoming a journeyman that upcoming prospects will be matched against to get a big name on thier record, I dont see that happening.

But time will tell. He might get knocked out by Maidana and retire, You got to take it one fight at a time in boxing.

Well thats alot of fights right there, Lets say 3 fights a year over the next 5 years, Mean 15 more fights.

So to unify the 140lbs division, move upto 147lbs and beat someone like berto and defend his title maybe unify there, then move up again to 154 and win a title and unify, Its a tall order.

Plus he will probably loose a couple of fights in the process, but like I said time will tell. His career might end by Maidana if he gets knocked out.

 

Being in L.A i think has helped Khan alot. He does seem to be coming out his shell alot more and can only be good for him, so he might just surprise us all on the personality front. Oscar never went in to promoting a young man, Khan is still very young.
