I wish Zeljko Mavrovic fought after the Lennox Lewis bout. He was far more skilled than given credit

Yeah I really wish we'd seen more of him. I first saw him when he annihilated Brit heavyweight Clifton Mitchell and then when he beat Julius Francis.

Decent brawler, just not quite good enough to be elite.

In his first fight at the highest level he gave a prime version of top 10 ATG HW a very tough nights work even though he was conceding 29lbs and 7'' in reach to him, and a lot of experience fighting at the world level. He was obviously teak-tough too with a hell of a set of whiskers. Definitely a quality fighter and there's no reason to believe he wasn't capable of making some real noise in the division had his career not been tragically cut short due to illness.

Didn’t he retire because of some type of muscle wasting syndrome? He was decent, gave Lewis a tough fight.

He fought absolutely no one other than Lewis. His claim to fame is that he took a beating.

To be honest Lewis won 10 rounds. And schooled Mavrovic in round 12 but Mavrovic did give him a lot of trouble in round 7. He had talent

Lewis looked mighty relieved at the end. Mavrovic gave him a tough fight

Interestingly, Ray Mercer stopped Mavrovic in 2 minutes in 1988, right before the Olympic Games where Mercer won Gold.

He gave him a tough fight for a couple of rounds and there were 1 or 2 somewhat close rounds. Mavrovic was a TOUGH son of a *****. Watching and scoring the full fight however Lewis took it wide and won the last few rounds big.

    Round 12 was a schooling.

These things happen sometimes. Mercer was a big puncher and would've been what like 27 at the time and Mav like 19?

Savon KO'd the iron-jawed Tua in the amateurs too.

Mercer later won all fights at Olympic Games by KO, including KO1 in the final over a guy who stopped Golota

I'm not talking about the number of rounds he won I just mean he gave him a tough fight in general. Lewis won clearly but Mavrovic made him work hard for it and Lewis once said that when you hit a guy with your best shots and they just keep on coming it's very mentally draining.
